Among the lush vegetation of the Peruvian Amazon is one of the most surprising mysteries of nature, the boiling Mayantuyacu River, whose waters exceed 90 degrees Celsius.
Known by locals as Shanay Timpishka (which translated from the Asháninka language means “Boiled with the heat of the sun”), is in Peru, in the department of Huánuco. The uncertain origin of its temperature and its healing power make this place a tourist attraction in the region. The Asháninkas tell the legend that a huge snake called Yacumama (“mother of waters”) created this river and maintains its high temperatures to protect the forest, which is so diverse that it has around 70 species per square meter, and which makes it a sacred and spiritual place.
On the other hand, in Mayantuyacu there is an Asháninka medicine center, where it is possible to experience various ceremonial and healing rituals, through which you can reconnect with nature.
Preserving Mayantuyacu means protecting the biodiversity of the primary jungle, disseminating a very ancient medical culture and exploring sustainable solutions to contemporary environmental challenges.
