Dora Mac - Diesel Duck 462

Thank you to some strong winds we needed to stay in La Gomera Marina so , even being really difficult, I managed to get the captain alway from Dora Mac enough time to get a bus ( Guagua ) and see just a small corner of the Gomera .
When Columbus left Palos / Huelva ( south of Spain ) to find a new route to India ( that’s how in those times people named : Indonesia , Japan , …) he first stopped in La Gomera . In those times was an island considered being the best for water and provisioning . After some weeks here , they left and everyone knows what happened ! . A new route to the indias opened ( only that it was a new continent right in the middle) ups ! .
Gomera is a very calm place where people comes to enjoy the forests and hikes . Less
Touristic but no less beautiful. Here is where Angela Merkel came for holidays and maybe that’s why we saw so many Germans . Who knows …. This is not a place for drinks and party . The only sound we listened during this short scape to the inside of the island were the birds . Local people here developed a language / whistle . Even is obligatory to study in the schools . Intrincate and old but very useful among the shepherds working isolated on the mountains in times with no phones . It was nice take our heads away from the crossing for a while . 🙂
Tomorrow we will be flying the asimetric on our way back to Las Palmas stopping first in Tenerife.

We were planing to fly the spinnaker but is blowing 40 knots so we will be inside the marina and exploring a little bit this small cute island.

¿Para qué sirven esos tangones que lleváis ? ¿Es un barco de pesca ?
¿ Reducen mucho la velocidad ?
Los tangones se llaman Paravanes . Llevan un sistema de poleas para subirlos y bajarlos . En el tope se engancha un cabo unido a una cadena y esta a un peso ( llamado fish o ala delta ) este peso irá bajo el agua dotando al barco de más estabilidad .
Dora Mac no es un barco de pesca. Es un SAT ( sail assisted trolley ) . Estos barcos están para cumplir con un objetivo : Cruzar océanos . Consumimos 1 litro de diésel por milla náutica llevando el motor a 1500 y a un ritmo de 6.4 nudos . Dora Mac puede llevar 7600 litros . Igualado a millas os sale más de un cruce Atlántico .
Los Paravanes ( estabilizadores) reducen 0.3 nudos . Es decir. Vale la pena ir más cómodo y un pelín más lento .
Los Paravanes se recogen buscando una zona tranquila y usando la driza de la mayor . Primero se levanta el tangon a posición vertical y se engancha la driza a un eslabon de la cadena . Mientras una persona evita que el fish ( delta ) golpee el caso, la otra le da vueltas al winche hasta que el peso se puede encajar en su sitio . Lo mismo se hace en el otro costado del barco . Se adujan los cabos y listo

Night show ,
En Timor , Los pescadores los rodean y se lanzan al mar para cogerlos con las manos . Llevan gafas casera echas con madera, cuerda y trozos de cristal .
Mañana busco el vídeo . Tuve la suerte de verlo en directo e incluso colaborar con ellos . :)

- Run the generator at the same time of main engine letting the generator run the water maker
- Fill oil and check oil on the main engine while it is running
- clean the propeller from barnacles

¿No estáis siendo un poco exagerados? . No lo creo . Es más . Algunas cosas deberían haberse echo incluso antes . ( así que cachete en el trasero para nosotros mismos ) . Sabíamos dónde y cómo montar un aparejo de fortuna en caso de que el timón falle . Ayer decidimos probarlo . ¿Y con qué nos encontramos ? Pues que la caña del timón que se usaría no se podía conectar a la pala del timón porque no ajusta bien . Hay que ampliar el hueco .
En una de las llegadas durante la Regata de la Autonomía en las Azores , tuvimos que usar el timón de fortuna . Perdimos algo de tiempo pero aún asi quedamos primeros en esa prueba y primeros también en la general .

Perros y redes . Tenemos la típica red de seguridad que usan muchos veleros pero vamos a reemplazarla por esta malla de plástico . Dora Mac tiene poca borda en varias zonas donde la perrita podría caer al mar . Tras probar varios sistemas creo que lo mejor será comprar malla ( semirrígida ) con agujeros más grandes para que el agua discurra bien y se vacíe por los imbornales sin problema . En algunas áreas será más sencilla de poner y quitar para no molestar las maniobras del barco . Aunque la perrita no pasea por cubierta durante las navegaciones es posible que en algún momento sobretodo durante una travesía de varios días desee jugar fuera y aunque estéticamente lucirá feo el barco , nosotros estaremos mucho más tranquilos .

Tested the secondary automatic pilot which is a Comnav copy of the primary one . We learned that we need adjust the rudder reference unit of the secondary autopilot and replace a broken course change k**b .

Jimmy Cornell es un gran navegante que ha escrito muchos libros sobre rutas de navegación . Es uno de los grandes y el organizador de varios rallies .
Este hombre defiende que cada día en el mar debes seguir ciertas rutinas. Hacer la cama. Afeitarse , ponerse ropa limpia … nada de abandonarse solo por el echo de estar en un barco. Abandonarse no es bueno para la cabeza . Eso es algo que en Dora Mac seguimos a rajatabla . Nos ponemos la ropa de trabajo , la rompemos , la manchamos , … , pero … cuando todo ha terminado . Nos cambiamos y apreciamos el volver a una cama limpia y bien echa .
Básicamente es seguir lo que una madre siempre nos dice : hija , no cocines con la ropa de salir ! . 🙂

It was a little bit late when we stopped Dora Mac in a bay south of Tenerife, even that we fell a little tired , we took a shower , change our clothes , dress fancy and enjoy the San Valentine. Claes is very romántic but not a great artist . I love how he surprises me . I also wanted to do something very special so I cooked his favorite dish : scallops Galician style ( Vieiras a la gallega ) . It was a great night. Calm waters , beautiful moon , lots of of stars , candles , music and good food with one of our favorite Galician wines .
Today we will be heading to La Gomera island . We need to find shelter for strong winds coming .
Underway we will be testing all our communication systems.
( Bianca also got a san Valentín present. A very juicy Chichen breast and a new toy ).
