On a cold winter evening in late January 1977 a falangist hit squad burst into lawyers' offices at number 55 Calle Atocha in the centre of Madrid. The gunmen opened fire on the unarmed attorneys killing some, wounding others. The lawyers were all on the political left, dedicated to defending workers`s rights, and the attack became known as the Attocha Massacre. The falangists expected public support but their plan backfired. The murders generated widespread revulsion and became one of the milestones on the Spanish road from dictatorship to democracy. Today, there is a large monument dedicated to the memory of the lawyers outside Atocha 55 (see below) and you can read the full story in Frontline Madrid
