14/02/2023

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is a Spanish museum, largely built around a private art collection. The basis of the art collection was laid by Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza. His son Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza further expanded the collection.

The collection grew into the largest private collection in the world, next to that of the Queen of England. She was based in Lugano in Switzerland for many years. After six years of negotiations, Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza sold an important part of his art collection to the Spanish state in July 1993 for the 'friend's price' of 250 million euros.

The Palace of Villahermosa (Spanish: Palacio de Villahermosa) was built in the late 18th century and early 19th century in the Madrid neoclassical style. It was restored and adapted to its museum function under the direction of architect Rafael Moneo. The permanent collection is housed on the ground, first and second floors. The arrangement is chronological, starting with the oldest works on the second floor. In the basement, there is a room for temporary exhibitions.

Malasaña is a trendy, student-friendly neighbourhood with streets lined with coffee houses, bakeries and vintage clothing shops. Plaza del 2 de Mayo, a historic square with lively bars and weekend market stalls, is a popular meeting point. In the evenings, live bands and DJs play alternative dance and rock clubs, and art and open-air films can be seen in the 18th-century halls and courtyards of the Conde Duque cultural centre.

Once you’re in this beautiful neighbourhood, you’ll be able to feel the hipster atmosphere.
Fashion in Spain is very present and you won’t be disappointed when you see the numerous thrift shops, in total, you will find no less than 15.

Very nice places in Malasaña are 1862 Dry Bar, Club Malasaña, and Diplodocus.

01/02/2023

The Temple of Debod is a structure in Madrid and is located in the Parque del Oeste. The temple was dedicated to the god Amun of Nubia.

The temple was donated to Spain by the Egyptian government to save it from flooding after the construction of the great Aswan High Dam.

The place chosen for the temple was the small city of Debod on the banks of the Nile River. Madrid didn't even exist then, and the place where the city now stands was very far away from civilization at that time. The High Dam was built between 1960 and 1970. Its purpose was to increase the amount of hydropower, regulate the flooding of the Nile and increase agricultural production. The construction of the dam necessitated the destruction of the Temple of Debod, along with other historic buildings.

On June 6, 1970, a huge ship transported all the stone blocks to the port of Valencia (Eastern Spain). Once there, the temple was transported with suitcases to Madrid, where it was rebuilt like a giant puzzle thanks to a team of expert Egyptologists. The site chosen for the temple was a small hill near Plaza España ("Parque de la Montaña"), right where some of the bloodiest battles in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) took place.

The Banco de España ("Bank of Spain") is the central bank of Spain. The bank is part of the European System of Central Banks. The main building is located on Calle de Alcalá at the Plaza de Cibeles square in Madrid.

The bank issues Spanish euro banknotes and coins, oversees the Spanish banking system, manages Spain's currency and precious metal reserves and advises the Spanish government on economic and monetary matters. However, the bank is no longer responsible for Spain's monetary policy. Since Spain joined the EMU in 1999, this has been in the hands of the European Central Bank.

The governor of Banco de España is appointed by the Spanish government. Since 2018, economist Pablo Hernández de Cos serves as the bank's governor.

Did you know that in 2017 a series came out called: La casa de Papel which also took place in the Bank of Espana in Madrid, it was about
a mysterious man who calls himself "the Professor", along with eight specialists (named after cities), organizes the biggest heist in Spanish history. Together they want to infiltrate the Royal Mint of Spain to print banknotes themselves. The goal is to leave the building with a total of 2.4 billion euros in the bag. In the third part, the surviving robbers are forced into hiding. With the help of new members, they plan and execute an attack on the Bank of Spain.

The bank has an extensive art collection, including work by Picasso and Tàpies and a series of portraits of King Carlos III that Goya painted on commission.

19/10/2022

Madrid is what many art lovers can describe as paradise, boasting some of the best museums the world has to offer - but there are three, in particular, that are finer than the rest. Referred to as the golden triangle, or by some as the triangle of art, is the name that is commonly given to the area of Madrid that includes the three main museums dedicated to the art of the city:

The Prado Museum
The Reina Sofia Museum
The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

All three of these are located on the Paseo del Prado, starting with the Reina Sofía Museum, which is located just next to Atocha station.
The Prado Museum is widely considered to have one of the best collections of European art in the world and is so vast that only a seventh of its 25,000-strong collection can be displayed at any one time.

Do you consider yourself an avid art enthusiast? or maybe you're the type to appreciate some good art. If the golden triangle speaks to you as it does to us, then...
