Feliz San Isidro 2025!!!!

🤗🥰💯🤩👧🏼👨🏼‍🦱👩🏻‍🦰🍾👗

I attended the University of Warwick as an undergraduate (1994-1997) before taking a Masters in Venetian Art (1998-1999) and then completed my PhD. in 2008. That is a lot of years learning to look at Art History: stone vaults, bricks, and mortar with the late Dr. Richard Morris (I took 2 full-year courses with him: Monastery and Cathedral and The Englishman's Home), tomb sculptures, medieval frescoes, and textiles with Professor Julian Gardner (I took 3 courses with him: Florence and Flanders, The Monumental Tomb, Rome Before Avignon and he supervised my thesis on the patronage exercises by cardinals in 1350s Italy and France); tempera paintings and the importance of colour, light and botany in Renaissance Italy with the delightful Paul Hills; and l even took one module on Bauhaus architecture led by Louise Campbell who was my undergraduate tutor.

During these intense and formative years at Warwick, l learned many skills: to take photographs with a very old camera; to do speed reading for an essay; to write an essay composing a convincing argument; to read Latin, French, German and Italian texts without any proper previous training (aside from the 2 years of Latin in High school back in Spain); to be a first aider for the students under my care in the residential buildings on campus; to write an incident report for disciplinary procedures on campus; to use medieval archives in Avignon, Toledo and the Vatican for a whole year and how to deal with the sometimes reluctant clergy...and all of these, with pen and paper and no laptops, smartphones or Internet, at least during my undergraduate years! We had to go to the Slide Library and use printed photographs of buildings or tombs (in black and white) to prepare for 3-hour long final exams.

But the vital lessons l learned were that l left Warwick knowing HOW to think. HOW to pursue an academic career with honour and integrity.

Honestly, l am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of the Art History Department at Warwick for so many years! And l owe my professional success to the academic credentials l gained there. Thank you, my truly wonderful teachers and clerical staff at Warwick University!

On 2 November 2024, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Art History Department at Warwick University. I was so pleased to be able to make it! It was a very special occasion, and l took the opportunity to say THANK YOU to my wonderful professors there: Professor Julian Gardner (who supervised my doctoral thesis), Louise Campbell, and Paul Hills, the expert on Venetian painting. What a shame that Anthea Callen was not there because l was SO fortunate to take her module on Impressionist Art and Techniques as an undergraduate. Sadly, Dr. Richard Morris passed away a few years ago, but we were reminiscing about our legendary architecture field trips with him.

Be grateful and respect your professors. I admired and revered them back then in 1994; the older l get, the more l respect them for what they taught me!!

I was also able to thank, once again, the most wonderful secretary, Julia Brown. My thesis would have barely made it without her support throughout the years.

What a trip down Nostalgia Lane for me after soooo many years: the Central Library where l used to work shelving books and eventually be part of customer service; the Arts Centre where l worked as a cinema assistant and security at the Mead Gallery; Rootes Halls of accommodation where l looked after hundreds of undergraduate students for many years...

What an incredible experience my formative years at Warwick University were!!!

Sometimes, it takes me months to post stuff. Life is hectic, and l am very busy as a working mum running my own business, but my success is 100% thanks to what l learned at

Revisiting the Basilica of Saint Denis in Paris, Royal Pantheon, AND birthplace of Gothic architecture, thanks to Abbot Suger. This is the most important apse in Paris! 💯

The 19th-century cenotaphs and statues of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinettte are a sobering sight. What a history lesson!

Our kids enjoyed learning about the medieval burial practices and what they did with the body of Saint Louis of France in the 13th century (his remains are not here, by the way).

Plaques all over the city of Paris commemorate the heroes of the Resistance (some of whom ended up in N**i camps like Buchenwald) and those who fell during the Liberation of Paris.

So very different from the lack of antifascist memory in my city, Madrid!

On our way to the Sacre Coeur Basilica, we stopped at a bakery called Delmontel and got the best baguette in the city 🥖; we had to sample some choux at Popelini 🧁 and we also bought some delicious creamy French cheese at Beilleveire 🧀🧀🧀; all of these food places are on Rue des Martyrs, a dream street for foodies!!!

Sacre Coeur was very busy with tourists. The church interior must have been restored recently because l remember it so sombre and dark years ago.

Worth the climb? Yes! Particularly if you stroll along Rue des Martyrs..yummy stuff everywhere! 😀 🤗😋😋😋😋

We did it! We got tickets for Monet's house and gardens in Giverny! I booked them as soon as they became available online on 3 March. This place is only open between March and September/October, depending on the year. What a treat to see the blooming tulips! What an unforgettable experience for our children to see in person the same green bridge that they had seen in a painting at the Musee d'Orsay! 🌉🌺🪻🌷🎨🖼💕🪷

It was a bit of an adventure to reach this site from central Paris, involving an early train and a bus shuttle (we missed the regular local bus and ended up paying for the shuttle which has rather limiting timetable..).

200% worth doing this is you can get tickets for Monet's house!!!

Despite how crowded it was by the time we arrived at 9:40 a.m. (we had 9:30 tickets), everyone was courteous and relaxed and allowed each other space and time for enough photos.

We got to enjoy this oasis of beauty in relative silence. Such a change from the cacophony in the Louvre! Nobody was pushing us. Nobody was yelling or running.. it was absolutely LOVELY and the children enjoyed it very, very much. 💯🙏💓

We will definitely return; the gardens change slightly every month, and it must be stunning to see the roses in full bloom later on in the year. ⚘️⚘️⚘️

200% recommended for families with kids! No sketching or picnic is allowed on site, which is fully understandable to be respectful and facilitate the flow of visitors. 👏

Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris: Despite the length of the line (there were no online tickets left!), the pace was rather fast and steady, so it took us 15 minutes to enter. I was excited to see the recently restored and cleaned interior. Some fellow medievalists find this cleaning campaign has been too aggressive; to me, it brings it back to the original appearance in the 13th century, and l quite like it.

I was shocked at the soot and grime over the statues of Mary and the 2 angels on the facade. How did they not clean them? 😶😱😦

Notice the plaque on a wall bear the crossing about the Liberation of Paris in 1944. They do any annual service to remember the victims of WWII and to pray for Peace. 🙏🕊

By the way, once outside, you can not see the flying buttresses at the east end due to the current restoration campaign of the steeple over the crossing. Let's hope that this comes to an end soon and that we can see the whole of Notre-Dame again!

Oh my..the floral tribute at the Jardin des Tuileries to French painter Delacroix!!! How truly beautiful and thoughtful is this? I adore this intellectual depth; what a glorious homage to the palette of Eugene Delacroix! To exit the Louvre Museum and then find his colours in Nature.. it is simply stunning!

Well done, whoever is in charge of the 🎨💯🖼👏👏👏👏

We would never see this in Madrid...can you imagine a tribute to Velazquez or Goya in the Retiro Gardens? Hola, and ?

The Water Lilies cycle displayed at the Musee de l'Orangerie in Paris: Monet's gift to the State of France after the end of World War I is sublime. To me, it condenses Monet's admiration for the calming effects of Nature on the human soul and our desire for PEACE, the hope for redemption, the need for meditation, to be able to process loss in the cycle of Life.

We absolutely LOVE that this museum enforces SILENCE. After the chaos and the disrespectful yelling at the Louvre and Versailles, this was a hugely welcome change for us. Thank you, , for providing such a beautiful experience!

Versailles. No words. The excess
(the mirrors, the chandeliers, the gold leaf everywhere..) plus the gorgeous grounds, the fountains, the Queen's Hamlet, and her significant detachment from reality..

Worth seeing? Yes!! Despite the crowds inside (truly quite overwhelming, suffocatingly busy along the various chambers), it is a History lesson. You fully understand the French Revolution after seeing Versailles.
