Un pequeñito cuento que leí por primera vez cuando debía tener unos 12 años. De él jamas he olvidado la repetida frase de entrada y final. El resto es esencia y luz de SENDEROS DEL MAR.

ANGELUS

“Eran trece hombres, trece valientes curtidos en el peligro y avezados a las luchas del mar. Con ellos iba una mujer, la del patrón. Los trece hombres de la costa tenían el sello característico de la raza vasca: cabeza ancha, perfil aguileño, la pupila mu**ta por la constante contemplación de la mar, la gran devoradora de hombres.

El Cantábrico los conocía. Ellos conocían las olas y el viento.

La trainera, larga, estrecha, pintada de negro, se llamaba Arantza, que en vascuence significa espina. Tenía un palo corto, plantado junto a la proa, con una vela pequeña...

La tarde era de otoño, el viento flojo, las olas, redondas, mansas, tranquilas. La vela apenas se hinchaba por la brisa, y la trainera se deslizaba suavemente, dejando una estela de plata en el mar verdoso....

Habían salido de Motrico y marchaban a la pesca con las redes preparadas, a reunirse con otras lanchas para el día de Santa Catalina. En aquel momento pasaban por delante de Deva.

El cielo estaba lleno de nubes algodonosas y plomizas. Por entre sus jirones, trozos de un azul pálido. El sol salía en rayos brillantes por la abertura de una nube, cuya boca enrojecida se reflejaba temblando sobre el mar.

Los trece hombres, serios e impasibles, hablaban poco. La mujer, vieja, hacía media con gruesas agujas y un ovillo de lana azul. El patrón, grave y triste, con la boina calada hasta los ojos, la mano derecha en el remo, que hacía de timón, miraba impasible el mar. Un perro de aguas, sucio, sentado en un banco de popa, junto al patrón, miraba también al mar, tan indiferente como los hombres.

El sol iba poniéndose... Arriba, rojos de llama, rojos cobrizos, colores cenicientos, nubes de plomo, enormes ballenas. Abajo, la piel verde del mar, con tonos rojizos, escarlatas y morados. De cuando en cuando, el estremecimiento rítmico de las olas,...

La trainera se encontraba frente a Itziar. El viento era de tierra, lleno de olores de monte. La costa se dibujaba con todos sus riscos y sus peñas.

De repente, en la agonía de la tarde, sonaron las horas en el reloj de la iglesia de Itziar y, luego, las campanadas de Ángelus se extendieron por el mar como voces lentas, majestuosas y sublimes.

El patrón se quitó la boina y los demás hicieron lo mismo. La mujer abandonó su trabajo y todos rezaron, graves, sombríos. Mirando al mar tranquilo y de redondas olas.

Cuando empezó a hacerse de noche, el viento sopló ya con fuerza, la vela se redondeó con las ráfagas de aire, y la trainera se hundió en la sombra, dejando una estela de plata sobre la negruzca superficie del agua,...

Eran trece los hombres, trece valientes, curtidos en el peligro y avezados a las luchas del mar.”

👉Es el tramo más salvaje y solitario de toda la Costa Vasca. Pero es precisamente lo accidentado del terreno lo que ha permitido que este tramo costero permanezca salvaje como uno de los tesoros mejor guardados. La primera parte del recorrido es la más suave, desde el faro de Higuer. Pero pronto aparecen los relieves abruptos de constantes subidas y bajadas contorneando la silueta de la costa.Poco a poco nos vamos asomando a imponentes acantilados de roca arenisca torturados por la acción erosiva del agua. Los nombres, en Euskera, imponen carácter al paisaje: hondonada de Labetxu o valle de los colores, plataforma pétrea de Tximistakurratua, praderas de Mitxitxola.
Si no se desea caminar el tramo completo existen un par de opciones más sencillas que combinan tramos de costa y montaña.

👉It is the wildest and loneliest stretch of the entire Basque Coast, however it is precisely the rugged terrain that has allowed this coastal section to remain wild as one of the best kept treasures. The first part of the route is the gentlest, from the Higuer lighthouse. Soon the abrupt reliefs of constant ups and downs appear, contouring the silhouette of the coast. Little by little we look out at awesome sandstone rock cliffs tortured by the erosive action of water. The names, in Euskera language, impose character on the landscape: Labetxu ravine or valley of colors, Tximistakurratua stone platform, Mitxitxola meadows.
If you do not want to walk the entire section, there are a couple of easier options that combine coastal and mountain sections.

👉The winding coastline always makes for a special setting. The tour starts in Saint Jean de Luz and ends at Bilbao. It works like a stitch uniting the landscapes into a whole. It is a physical but also mental layout, punctuated by milestones that mark moments of contemplation and deep thinking. The old roads of the Basque coast are actually 250 km of the smell of the sea and history. They become seven days to discover the beauty and mystery of high and low tides, and have an intimate and calm encounter with an old friend, the sea, its heartbeat and mood.
During the walk we listen to trails talking about whalers and fishermen, seaweed collectors, pilgrims and pirates. Basque towns with an adventurous spirit look at the sea with pride: Zarautz, Mundaka, Donosti. Finally, and before we lose ourselves on the horizon, the seashore also holds other types of fantastic stories, those of the incessant dialogue that rock and water have kept since the beginning of time.

SENDEROS DEL MAR
La serpenteante línea de costa siempre constituye un escenario especial. El tour empieza en San Juan de Luz y termina en Bilbao. Funciona como un cosido uniendo los paisajes en un todo. Es un trazado físico pero también mental, jalonado de hitos que marcan momentos de contemplación y reflexión. Los viejos caminos de la costa vasca son en realidad 250 km de olor a mar e historia. Siete días para descubrir la belleza y el misterio de las mareas altas y bajas, y tener un encuentro intimo y calmado con un viejo amigo, el mar, su latido y estado de ánimo.

Durante el caminar escuchamos senderos hablando de balleneros y pescadores, de recolectores de algas, de peregrinos y piratas. Las poblaciones vascas de espíritu aventurero miran al mar con orgullo: Zarautz, Mundaka, Donosti. Finalmente y antes de perdernos en el horizonte, la orilla del mar también guarda otro tipo de historias fantásticas, las del incesante dialogo que mantiene la roca y el agua desde el inicio de los tiempos. Walkscape, un acto a la vez perceptivo y creativo, una lectura y escritura del territorio.
