A Step Ahead - custom guided journeys We design and orchestrate custom luxury travel in Africa and the Pyrenees, especially accompanied by

We design custom itineraries and conduct these journeys usually accompanied by a specialist guide. Our current area of expertise is Eastern and Southern Africa (with our own A Step Ahead guides) and in the Pyrenees (France & Spain). While we often stay in luxury camps, lodges and hotels, our emphasis is on the experience. For those who have known us since the mid 1990s, we used to call our guide services Wilderness Africa.

One morning in June, we came across 3 male cheetah who were walking along the edge of a burn. I imagine they were making use of the smoke as cover, scouting for prey. We stayed with them for a couple of hours. One walked with a limp so effectively depended on the other two for a meal until he recovered. We saw them see a line of wildebeest moving through the grassland. The wounded cheetah rested while the other two chased and killed a young wildebeest. As they feasted, the lone fellow was calling - a shrill bird-like cry. It was quite windy, and the others didn't hear him. By chance, he wandered nearer and found them, so all three got to eat. That was a memorable morning!

Where can you rest, relax, and reminisce after a successful climb to the summit of Africa's highest mountain? Somewhere not too far away and entirely different, perhaps? We watched wildlife, were atuned to sounds, and soaked up sunsets in Tarangire National Park. We observed an eastern chanting goshawk search for a mouse, found a leopard in a candelabra tree, followed a red and yellow barbet look for insect prey from a termite mound - all before arriving in camp, where we were frequently visited by elephants. What contrast in a matter of days!

The descent passed through the vegetation zones in reverse. After descending from the summit (previous group of photos), which seems devoid of life (and is low on oxygen).. we continued through the desert zone. These images are from the last day, descending through the moorland, then heath and finally the forest. We again saw magnificent giant lobelia and giant groundsel, came across a flock of singing Hunter's cisticolas (Cisticola hunteri - the brown birds), an unusual (for me) black stonechat  (Saxicola torquatus) and the stunning and iridescent scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird (Nectarinia johnstoni). Lower down in the forest zone, we saw several tree hyraxes (Dendrohyrax validus - rodent-sized tree climbing mammals) and two species of monkey. The climb was so rewarding. The mountain crew was fantastic, as was the support from base.

The following 5 days involved traversing the northern slopes, through moorland and high desert zones, and then climbing to summit via Gilman's Point. We descended to Kibo Hut and across the Saddle, through desert and back into the moorland zone. The birds are a streaky seedeater and a dusky dove. The ragged peaks are Mawenz, Kilimanjaro's 2nd highest massif

Ngorongoro Crater is a geological marvel, with rich soils, permanent water sources, a wide range of habitats, inhabited by traditional pastoralists and an astounding amount of wildlife. A morning in this caldera is always full of surprises. These photos were taken the same morning.

The only two Northern White Rhino still alive... Sudan, the world's last male northern white rhino, died in 2018. Conservationists had the foresight to collect semen from him and other northern white rhino bulls. So with the collection of o**m from the last viable female, they can fertilize these o**m and implant them in Southern White surrogate females and bring the Northern White Rhino back from extinction! A truly amazing story of conservation success!
