I dont think that my Bran/Brasov/Bucharest post worked either so here it is:

BRAN, BRASOV, AND BUCHAREST - ROMANIA

If you go to Romania you pretty much have to go to Bran castle, the most famous castle in the world. Each room is perfectly preserved in the style of the original furnishings and the architecture is incredible. Like a spooky fairytale, it had secret staircases and labyrinthine hallways, one secret passage was literally hidden behind a bookshelf - that's an absolute must-have in any house I will build.
Next to the castle is a historical village, with 600yo peasant houses sitting like little gingerbread houses in the snow, Sam and I had the place to ourselves and loved it as much as the castle.

We caught the bus back to Brasov and walked around the old town… I'm still just so obsessed with medieval walled towns. Although I was a bit miserable by the end of the day, it had been at most -10c all day and I was pretty frozen solid.

The next day, which was New Years Eve, we caught the train down to Bucharest through some of the most breathtaking scenery - lush snow covered forests, impossibly tall mountains, adorable little villages, and ski runs right next to the train.

We arrived in Bucharest in time to settle into our apartment before heading out to join in the festivities. A block away from where we were staying was a huge concert where we danced to the fun Romanian music, although we partied a bit too hard a bit too early, and were already to go home by 10pm. Luckily the fireworks went off literally right next to our apartment so we got an amazing show!
The rest of our stay in Bucharest was a bit uneventful, we both caught a cold, but still managed to get out and have a bit of a walk. Bucharest is really lovely, they call it the Paris of East Europe - so many of the old buildings are still so well preserved and just beautiful.

I can't seem to find pictures from Bucharest at the moment - hopefully they haven't been lost!

SIGHISOARA - ROMANIA

Sam and I had a weekend away in an old Saxon town - Sighisoara, the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, and also Renate ;) Visiting Sighisoara was like stepping back in time 600 years, all the buildings were straight out a fairytale.
It is one of the best preserved Medieval citadels in Europe, with intact walls and towers at each corner. We stayed in a 500 year old house, just a short cobblestoned walk away from the town's beautiful clocktower. Inside the clocktower was a museum containing lots of medieval artifacts, and we watched the old clock's mechanism run at 12pm - Sam geeked out pretty hard at that, well me too.
Sighisoara's best attractions are its 13th and 14th century towers. Originally 14, now 9, the towers were built and managed by the town's guilds (like the blacksmiths, tailors, and cobblers, for example).
In our time there I think we explored every little corner of the town. We drank wine in the very house Vlad was born in, we went into the crypt underneath the town's 1000 year old church (oldest grave award - 16th century!), and we watched the sunset while drinking local wine, eating local chocolate, and chasing local cats in the cemetery. Pretty much a perfect afternoon in my books.
The train ride to and from Sighisoara was excellent too - great views of the countryside, our own little compartment, and some old people gave us chocolate :)

360 degrees in 365 days, Day 15 - Inside the Ljubljana AntiFa anarchist camp.

Ljubljana is literally a postcard down, a sweet little dinky place full of cobblestones and spires. The only deviation is an old prison/grounds that have become the home to the local anarchist community. It's a self regulating community filled with amazing art and sculpture, and apparently the town loves it because they help each other out and attract tourists.

PESTEANA - ROMANIA

Sam and I rented out a gorgeous little log cabin in the countryside to unwind for the week over Christmas, our first white Christmas! (Although most of the snow fell on boxing day)

We drank lots of mulled wine, made a gingerbread house, read books, played videogames, and relaxed by the fire - all the things you should do if you have a log cabin Christmas! Forgot to take photos of inside the cabin, but imagine what the most perfect cabin looks like inside and then that's it!

After realising we hadn't left the house in a couple days, we hiked though the hills behind the house. All the trees were covered in little thorns made of ice and sparkled in the sunlight, I've never seen anything so magical!

The fact that it was Christmas really reminded me of how far away from home, and friends, and family we are, but our host Rares ensured we got to really experience a warm traditional Romanian Christmas.

On Boxing day, Rares took us up to the mountains where we walked through a proper snow-covered pine forest and had a super fun snowball fight. Afterwards he took us to the Mayor's house where we sang traditional Romanian Christmas songs, feasted on local food and drank (maybe a bit too much) homemade plum wine, it was such a special and unique night and I feel so lucky to have had that experience! (Will upload some videos of us singing :) )

CLUJ - ROMANIA

Based on a conversation with a guy we met in Berlin, Sam and I kind of spontaneously decided to visit Cluj, Romania. It's a student city in the north of Romania, the capital of the Transylvanian province, but with a small town vibe.

We were staying close to the Old Town, where you have all the cute old postcard-worthy buildings and streets, and sections of the old wall (yay!). Cluj is super cute, they had a sweet Christmas market in the town square, Christmas lights on every street-sign and building, a concert every night, as well as a heap of awesome cafes and restaurants (one in particular I loved that was completely decorated with steampunk furniture and sculptures). We also walked through this awesome old cemetery and skipped ice across the half frozen lake.

As you hit the outer suburbs of Cluj, it's all uniform communist-era apartment blocks, I have a new-found love for communist architecture, I find so much beauty in the brutalism and symmetry, but still there were lots of mid-century almost retro-futuristic buildings.

We found lots of interesting abandoned buildings too - once great monuments to manufacturing and industry, now crumbling and overgrown with weeds, beautiful in their desolation.

Across the road from our apartment was a massive church that's apparently been slowly getting built over the past 20 years, and then I realised - hey, when have you ever seen a church getting built? It's a bit of a culture shock to realise that there are many deeply religious countries still, where Australia is so secular. Our churches are getting turned into stylish apartments!

But my favourite part - just outside of Cluj there happens to be the "World's Most Haunted Forest" - apparently there have been multiple ghost and UFO sightings, as well as other strange happenings over the years. We didn't see anything spooky, but it was fun to pretend! This was the first time Sam and I hiked though a forest in the snow and it was so lovely and peaceful, the only signs of life being the many footprints left behind by foxes, rabbits, and deer (and werewolf tracks, but Sam doesn't believe me).

Unfortunately I think we somehow lost most of the photos taken from around Cluj, manage to get a couple off the phone at least.

360 degrees in 365 days, Day 14 - Gellért Hill, overlooking the Danube

We basically raced up a mountain to catch Budapest before the sun went down. It was the 20th kilometre we walked that day, but we still managed to watch the sun use the hill to carve a line over the city, cold beer in hand.

Pesteana, Boxing Day 2016. After leaving the mayor's house, we stopped in at Ardelean Marcel's friend's house for one quick song.... that turned into about 20 more.

By now Sam and I had drank a few plum wines and started to recognise parts of some songs and could sing along as you can see in this video.

Such a special night! Thanks Rares and Gabi! Hateg Island

Pesteana, Boxing Day 2016.

After an afternoon in the snow we went to the Mayor's house and sang traditional Romanian Christmas songs. Sam decided to film the cakes for about half the video, don't they look tasty.

Oh and when they asked us what were some traditional Australian Christmas songs - we sang How to Make Gravy by Paul Kelly, of course.
