Single Fin - Surf Travel Longboard Surf Coaching in the North of Spain Single Fin organizes surf trips to beautiful destinations which are off the beaten track.

Tip Time Tuesday⁠ ⁠ To be prepared is half the victory! Before walking towards to the nose of a longboard, good positioning and angling the board on the wave in combination with the right amount of speed and good timing is crucial. We call this the ‘set up’. Your board must be positioned on the steep and top part of the wave and close to the breaking part (pocket). A common mistake is to start your cross steps too far from the pocket and as a result your nose will dive under.⁠ There are different ways to set up for your cross step and noseride. This all depends on the type of wave. However, many times the best option can be found right after your bottom turn.⁠ ⁠ ⁠ In this video longboard coach Evert Jan is setting himself up by performing a 'fading bottom turn'. To add some variety he is doing this cross legged. It's all ok, as long as you put enough pressure on the tail throughout this turn. First he is heading towards the pocket instead of running away from it. So instead of going to the left straight away, he first directs his board to the right and keeps an eye on the left. When he notices the section on the left is steepening up, he starts turning in the middle part of the wave and passes through the steeper section with minimum speed. His boards starts to climb up and he angles his board parallel to the wave with enough pressure on the inside rail. He is now in a perfect position to start his cross steps towards the nose of the board. (Next lesson!) Most of the times, you can already start cross stepping when you are coming out of the turn and the board starts to climb up the face of the wave.⁠ ⁠ Many times you will get this wrong, especially in the beginning. When you find yourself too far from the pocket or the nose of your board is facing downwards, just try to cutback towards the pocket and reposition yourself again.
