the caldera also contains hot springs, waterfalls, valleys, and other scenery. There are two islands in the lake. On one of the islands there is an ancient church called Cherkos monastery. One can reach the islands and the monastery by ferry. Due to its unique topography, Wanchi is blessed with varieties of animal and plant species. For these reasons, Wanchi has become a popular tourist destination in Ethiopia.

Wenchi Lake is a beautiful volcanic crater lake that is famed as “Africa Switzerland”, it is also home to natural forests, hot springs, and waterfalls, as well as a traditional village.

Due to its unique topography, the Lake is also a habitat for varieties of animal and plant species, some aquatic birds and it is a splendid area for a number of indigenous forest reserves, including Egynia Abyssinica (Kosso- plant used in traditional medicine as a vermifuge) and Erica Arborea (Hasta).

Wonchi lake is a quaint crater lake which is located 120km away from Addis Ababa, The whole crater contains a large lake with small islands, hot mineral springs, waterfalls and beautiful valleys and farmland.

An old monastery with a church known as Wonchi Cherkos is positioned on one of the lake islands making the spot more enticing and mesmerizing.

The lava lake on Erta Ale was shown briefly during the 2010 movie Clash of the Titans during the journey sequence where Perseus travels to the underworld. 

Erta Ale is a continuously active basaltic shield volcano in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia. It is situated in the Afar Depression, a badland desert area. Erta Ale is the most active volcano in Ethiopia.

The Danakil Depression is located in the Afar region in northeastern Ethiopia, close to the border of Eritrea and Djibouti. It’s considered one of the hottest (average 34,4 C), driest (100-200 mm rainfall/year) and lowest regions on earth (125 meter below sea level). It is also one of the most geologically active regions with three tectonic plates meeting at the Afar Triple Junction.
