Thirty years of talking about famine in Ethiopia - why's nothing changed?

Even Today, About 8.3mln people in Ethiopia need relief food assistance in 2019 again.

humanitarian response plan for Ethiopia has been launched today in the presence of Commissioner Mitiku Kassa of the National Disaster Risk Management Commission, Mr. Aeneas Chuma, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator.

The plan lays out prioritized humanitarian needs in 2019 across eight sectors, including food, nutrition, shelter and non-food items, water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH), health, education, protection and agriculture.

The humanitarian situation in 2019 remained similar to 2018 mainly due to mass internal displacements in various parts of the country, and related humanitarian and protection needs.

Accordingly, at least 8.3 million people will require relief food/cash and non-food assistance during the year.

A total of $1.3 billion is required to address their
Food and non-food needs.

About 60% of the required fund will be covered by the government of Ethiopia and the remaining 40% will be secured from international and local donors.

According to Mitiku Kassa, Commissioner of the National Disaster Risk Management Commission, 46% of the IDPs are in Oromia, 22% in Somali, 12% in Amhara, 10% in SNNP, 4% each in Tigray and Afar regional states.

The remaining beneficiaries are in Gambela, Benishangul Gumuz, Harari and Dire Dawa, the Commissioner said.

Ethiopia was spared significant climate-related calamities last year, but spikes in conflict-induced displacements in 2018, which led to a near doubling of internally displaced population, contributed to high humanitarian response needs in 2019.

GOOD NEWS
ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES the new airport terminal brings a capacity to 22 million passengers per year. (Posted 27th January 2019)

Houston do you read‘ comes to mind as information is emerging that from the summer of 2019, Ethiopian Airlines will discontinue their flights to Los Angeles – for now – and instead commence a three times a week direct service to Houston, Texas. It is understood that the flights will route via a West African gateway yet to be announced.

Meanwhile has the airline also confirmed that they will up their flights from Addis Ababa to Washington DC, the US capital city, from the present daily service to 10 flights a week. The extra three flights will route from Addis via Abidjan.
Three of the daily flights to New York will route from Addis via Abidjan to JFK while the remaining four flights will route via Lome to Newark.
Chicago too will see more flights as the airline is preparing to up the frequencies to the ‘Windy City‘ from the present three to five a week.
With now 119 destinations served and a fleet of more than 100 aircraft in service, including the state of the art Airbus A350XWB, has Ethiopian Airlines over the years proven that the airline business in Africa does not have to be a massive lossmaker, unlike South African Airways or neighbours Kenya Airways, but that with smart forward planning and the willingness to cut lossmaking routes at an early stage, big profits can be achieved.

https://atcnews.org/2019/01/27/big-day-for-ethiopias-aviation-and-hospitality-industry/

Only today is the new airport terminal in Addis Ababa being officially opened bringing the airport’s capacity to 22 million passengers per year – again unlike in Nairobi where plans for a major expansion were stopped dead in its tracks – Project Greenfield was halted under controversial circumstances – giving the airline a further competitive advantage over their closest rivals, both in numbers of passengers and in terms of location.
Ethiopian Airlines is today also formally launching their entry into the hospitality business, owing a new 373 rooms hotel, the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel before breaking ground for an even larger unit later this year.
Ethiopian’s flight academy and maintenance business too have for long been continental leaders in their field.

29/10/2018

Ethiopia is opening up its borders to African visitors with a visa-on-arrival.

A hint from the Prime Minister in May 2018, then a confirmation of implementation by erstwhile president. In between both, the country began issuing visas online to tourists.

Finally, Ethiopia has announced a date for the start of a visa-on-arrival regime for all Africans. Africa’s second most populous nation will start visa-on arrival regime from November 9, 2018, PM Abiy Ahmed’s chief of staff confirmed on Friday.

According to Fitsum Aregaa, the current move is: “Consistent with PM Abiy Ahmed’s vision of a closer and full regional integration in Africa — where minds are open to ideas and markets are open to trade.”

Abiy had earlier this year disclosed that following Rwanda’s lead, Ethiopia was going to allow a visa-free regime for all Africans. At the time, he was speaking at a state banquet held for his visiting Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame.

Abiy said: “The President (Kagame) invited all Africans to travel to Rwanda without visas, we will follow you very soon.” On June 1 the issuance of visas online for all tourists kick started.

Ethiopia boasts the continent’s best national carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, which has made the Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, not just a regional but global aviation hub.

The most recent time the issue was came up was when ex-president Mulatu Teshome at the opening of parliament said the visa-on-arrival regime was to be implemented in this year.

Internal Flights in ETHIOPIA

Ethiopian Airlines is the only internal flight operator. If you are travelling internationally by Ethiopian Airlines then the internal flights are significantly cheaper. Tangible Ethiopia can organise purchase of internal flights at the cheaper price if required.

If we buy the internal flight for you then we will send you the confirmation from Ethiopian Airlines and all you need to do is present it to the check in desk with your passport.

Code Sharing

If you purchase your Ethiopian Airlines international ticket through an agency or through a non-Ethiopian Airlines office the ticket may be issued using ‘code sharing’. In this case Ethiopian Airlines will not offer discounted domestic flights.

Employment Opportunities and Challenges in Tourism and Hospitality Sectors!

Tourism and hospitality creates diversified employment opportunities in different sectors like accommodation, food and beverage establishments, transportation services, travel agencies, tour operation companies, natural and cultural attractions sites. The challenges are poor pay and working conditions, sexual harassment, discrimination, unequal treatment, low education and training, undemocratic and rigid corporate culture, seasonality and political instability which drastically reduce the number of visitors which in turn brings high employees’ turn over. Concerned stakeholders including, academicians, policy makers and business owners of tourism and hospitality shall take actions to bring sustainable work force for the development tourism and hospitality sectors.

Tourism is one of the world’s largest and rapidly growing industries. In the 21st century, global economy is driven by three major industries includes technology, telecommunication and tourism
Tourism is the collection of activities, services and industries that deliver a travel experience including attractions, transportations, accommodations, eating and drinking establishments of retail shops, entertainment, business and other hospitality services provided for individuals or groups of travelling away from homehome.

Tourism is extremely labour intensive and a significant source of employment. It is among the world‘s top creators of jobs requiring varying degrees of skills and allows for quick entry into the workforce for youth, women and migrant workers . In some countries, the contribution of tourism for employment is indispensible; for instance, India is the second largest employment generator in the field of tourism as large as 25 million jobs bs in 2014
Tourism and hospitality industries create many employment opportunities in different areas like accommodations, transportation, attractions sites. Therefore, the availability of skilled and trained manpower is a crucial element in the success of any tourism development plan or programme, hence employees is a sine qua non of tourism industry. However, the constraints of employment in tourism industry are unstable employment, low job status, long antisocial working hours and low pay. The immediate and most obvious consequences of such a situation is the difficulty of recruiting suitable staff and high staff turnover, these are costly to the success of the industry.
Indeed, less due attentions have been giving to employees working in tourism and hospitality sectors. However, staffs are the heart for excellent and prompt service delivery system. Thus, such staffs are arguably the most indispensable assets of the organization. The relationship between human resources and tourism can be expressed in two main aspects. First, tourism can only flourish if the industry can employ an adequate supply of good quality staff or sustainable workforce. The other issue is that the way in which staffs are treated by both managers and customers and vice versa should be in line with social equality and justice. Equally important, the quality of tourists’ experiences and images in a destination is highly depending on employees’ professionalism.
