The Bale Mountains National Park (BMNP) is a protected area of approximately 2,200 km2 and is located 400 km southeast of Addis Ababa in Oromia National Regional State in south-eastern Ethiopia. It belongs to the Bale-Arsi massif, which forms the western section of the south-eastern Ethiopian highlands. The BMNP covers the largest area higher than 3000m above sea level (asl) in Africa. The highest peak in the BMNP, Tullu Dimtuu, at an altitude of 4377m asl, is the second highest peak in Ethiopia. The park includes an Afroalpine plateau over 3500m asl, which is the largest area of Afroalpine habitat on the African continent, as well as a major section of moist tropical forest, the second largest in Ethiopia. For those interested in short range as well as longer challenging trekking activities, this is a convenient National Park worth visiting!

The Suri tribe are one of the few remaining tribes in the Omo Valley, that to this day have retained their authentic traditional values. Accessible through Jimma and Mizan Teferi, they are mainly settled around Tulgit and Kibish. 'Suri' - containing of three clans namely the Chai, Tirma and Zilamo, the Chai are settled around Kibish, the Tirma settled around Tulgit and the Zilmamo clan settled around Jeba.

The Danakil Depression extends into a massive area covering Djibouti and Eritrea to the North and Ethiopia to the South.

In the Ethiopian section, it covers roughly 275kms East-West and about 140kms North-South. Its highest point at Erta Ale Volcano Peak at 613 meters above sea level and it lowest level at 116 meters below sea level (-116m), annual day temperature ranging from the lowest approximately 35 degrees centigrade in the months of August to mid-March to the highest day temperatures approximately 45-52 degrees centigrade.

Of immense attraction and interest to visitors is the active Erta Ale Volcano located at the North-Eastern section of the Depression and the Dallol Salt Plains with Sulfur pools and the old-age Potash Extraction Site located at the North-Western section of the Depression. Additionally, the native inhabitants of the Depression, the Afar tribe, are of much interest with their nomadic life style, much comfortable in the extreme heat in these lowlands.

Travels to the Danakil Depression are recommended and operated from October to March due to the relatively bearable low temperature and dry driving route conditions, which otherwise are impassable due to flooded flat plains due to the heavy rains in the surroundings highlands of Tigray to the West and Afar to the East.
