Assale(As'Ale), 1966

Descriptions of the photos.
1. The Salt desert or Plain of Assale. It extends Sothwards for Over 200kilometers.

2. A view of the salt plain, that is, the plain and lake of Assale The plain's waters are shallow and subject both to seasonal shifts and regular tides. The small black hill in the background is Dallol' site.

3. Encamped close to the aircrafts landing strip.

4. Assale's Lake, were the salt is cut in slabs to be transported to Ethiopia. In some places it was still used as hard currency.

5. Camels awaiting their load of salt slabs to be transported to the Ethiopian highlands.
