THE OBELISK OF AXUM AND THE SURROUNDINGS

Ethiopia is old; old beyond all imaginings. As abyssinica, its culture and traditions dated back over 3000 years. Ethiopia’s north most state, Tigray contains the first outposts of the high and mountainous escarpment in which the country’s remarkable civilization was born and murtured towards the edge of this escarpment, the city of Axum emerged several years(centuries) before the birth of Christ as the capital of a state that traded with ancient Greece, Egypt and Asia, with its navies sailing as far a field as Ceylon, Axum late became the most important power between the roman empire and Persia and for while controlled a part of south Arabia.

The visitors to axum today will be struck most forcibly by two things, first the ages of its antiquities and secondly the remarkable quality and advanced design that went in to the indicating a level of culture and technology vitually unsurpassed in the ancient world.

The oldest building dating from the pre-Christian era, away further excavation before their origin can be confirmed. One side occupies an imposing site on the right of the gondar road about 1km. to the north of the town. Here archeologists have discovered the remains of what was once a massive palace with finely mortred stone walls, deep foundations and its own impressive drainage system. The floor of the large throne room has been discovered fallen in. it is not difficult to imagine the rulers of ancient axum holding court there. There are also private bathing areas of sophisticated design and there is a well preserved kitchen dominated by two huge bricks oven, local legend has it that this palace was the original seat of the queen of Sheba. In a large field on the other side of the gondar road, facing the palace, there are a number of rough hewn granite slabs, some standing, some fallen, among the giant stele said to be the nobles and kings burial place.

Ever since before history started, human creatives of different arts which are today’s great mystery of the world were erected, carved out and constructed with diversified motives and reasons. Though the exact reasons and motives are not yet fully identified.

Ethiopia is old, having its culture and traditions dating back to 3000 years and is famed for its age old mysterious archaeological findings and ancient civilizations which are supposed to have commenced during the pre-Axumite kingdom of today’s Axum. This kingdom was supposed to have ruled including Arab countries crossing the red sea, having its main port of Adulis. It was through this port that people of that time used to make trade contacts with foreign countries such as Arabia and Greece, the influence of which is still found on the ancient inscriptions of Axumite kingdom. People of the pre-axumite kingdom were believed to have come from Arabia across the red sea along with their civilizations. Axumite civilization hence resulted in the er****on of the fabled stelea of Axum, palaces and monuments.
Axumite kingdom later declined owing to different factors both internal and external, following the downfall Olled Zaf this kingdom, a non solomonic Dynasty, but ardent Christian called Zagwe dynasty which mean ‘dynasty of the Agew’ came to power in the 12th century making its capital at Roha of lasta, today’s Lalibela of Bugna, rich in miraculous and incredible architectures never found elsewhere in the world. Being the successor of the Axumite kingdom, the architecture found in lalibela does have an Axumite influence. The dynasty of the Agew was mostly engaged in constructing churches out of which the most dominant are the rock hewn churches of Lalibela hewn out by king Lalibela himself.
As power struggle was and is natural, a Christian Solomnic dynasty ruler known by the name Yekuno Amlak along with a relgiuos person Aba Tekle haimanot overthrew the illegitimate rule of the Zagwe Dynasty and restored solomonic dynasty in the 13th c. making his capital in shoa of Debrebirhan, then after in the 14th century the capital was shifted from the highlands of shoa to the lake Tana region by Minas and later to enfranz, not far from lake Tana by king SertseDingil.
Like the Zagwe rulers, the solomonic dynasty rulers were also dedicated Christians hence Tana monasteries were mostly built in the 14th century by Made Tsion for the security of the churches treasures.

Meskel, one of the major Ethiopian orthodox festivals celebrated on 27th September. It is a two days festival. Meskel festival is typically religious. Legend has it that the cross upon which Christ was crucified was discovered in the year 326 by Queen Helena/Empress Helen, Mother of Constantine the Great, and Unable to find the Holy Sepulchre, she prayed for help and was directed by the smoke to where the cross was buried. The queen in her efforts to discover the cross, setup long poles and set them a fire. Meskel is celebrated by dancing, feasting and lighting a massive bonfire known in Ethiopian tradition as "Damera" Colourful processions carrying buming torches converge on to the square, where a wax tapers are lit and the celebrations continue until dawn. Meskel commemorates the finding of the True Cross in the fourth century. The celebration of Meskel signifies the presence of the True Cross at mountain of Gishen Mariam monastery and also symbolizes the events carried out by Empress Helena.
