Timket (Epiphany) is a religious festival celebrated throughout Ethiopia, commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan by John the Baptist. It is held from the 19th to the 21st day of Ethiopian month of Ter, which falls in January.

The festival includes a colorful procession of priests, deacons and dancers, carrying large umbrellas and tabots in hand. The tabots, or replicas of the Ark of the Covenant, have been collected from churches and placed on bed frames carried by the deacons. On the 19th of Ter, the followers gather in their Sunday best and start the procession to a pool of water, usually a large lake or river. There, they throw the tabots into the water and lead a religious ceremony. Traditional singing and dancing follows, with most of the songs performed by children.

Timket, or the Ethiopian Epiphany, is an ancient religious festival celebrated in Ethiopia on January 19th of every year. The festival celebrates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. Timket is celebrated with colorful religious processions, feasts, and traditional dancing. On the eve of the festival, a tabot, which is a replica of the Ark of the Covenant, is taken from each Ethiopian Orthodox church and brought to a nearby pond where priests bless the water. In the morning, the tabot is placed on a platform and an outdoor Mass is held. The celebration includes singing, dancing, processions, and traditional music. On the final evening of the festival, the tabot is brought back to its church and accompanied by a large parade with colorful flags, banners, and a brass band.

The river Nile is by many seen as the most important river in the world. The source of the Blue Nile is a spring called Gish Abay in Ethiopia. This is the source of Gilgal Abay (meaning the little Abay), which is the most voluminous of the some sixty rivers flowing into Lake Tana.
Gish Abay has been seen as the outlet of the river Gihon flowing directly from Paradise, linking this world with Heaven. The holiness of Abay and the source, in particular, have had and still have an important role in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Moreover, before the source was Christianised, it had a central role in the indigenous religion, where lavish ox sacrifices were conducted. With the belief that Gish Abay is the source from heaven, the source still has a fundamental role in cosmology and Christianity.
The source of the Nile has been surrounded by myths from the dawn of civilization onwards. Emperors and explorers searched for the source in vain, and the source of the Blue Nile was discovered by Portuguese missionaries in the seventeenth century. Still, it is James Bruce who has left the largest imprint on this spring with his vivid and detailed descriptions of the rituals and sacrifices in particular and of Abyssinia in general. Today, this mythological place lives on and has gone through a long process of Christianisation.
