What a night! ✨ Yesterday, as we set off on our Aurora Hunting by Minivan tour, the sky was clear, but the northern lights activity forecast was low. However, the situation changed in an instant, and soon the auroras filled the entire sky!

What did we learn? Never give up! The northern lights are incredibly difficult to predict, and since they are a natural phenomenon, they can never be guaranteed. And to see them, you at least need a clear sky and darkness. 🌌

February started off cold but so beautiful! Today has been a freezing day, and last night, temperatures dropped to almost -40°C here in Lapland! ❄️

Sun rays at our reindeer fence today ☀️

Come and enjoy the sunny winter days at our home enclosure, where we currently have 26 reindeer! 🦌 You can take part in their daily feeding, after which we will grill sausages and enjoy hot homemade berry juice in the warmth of a traditional Sámi hut.

Some captures from the reindeer round ups a few days ago 📸

Reindeer are separated during the round-ups in late autumn or winter into those kept alive and those that will be sold to the meat industry. The reindeer that are kept alive are medicated and taken to winter pasture areas, where they roam freely. Some reindeer are brought to our home fence for the winter to ensure they survive the cold season.

You can meet our home reindeer during our activities ’Reindeer Fence Visit’ and ’Aurora Hunting with Reindeer’ 😍 In the activity ’A Day with Reindeer Herders,’ you can also join us in feeding a large herd of reindeer in the wilderness!

We are Johanna and Niilo, a local couple behind Ivalo Experiences Oy. 🙌🏼 We work as entrepreneurs and guides in our company. Both of us were born in Ivalo, and our families have deep roots here. Niilo has worked as a reindeer herder his whole life, like his ancestors.

Winter in Lapland and Staying Safe in Cold Weather ❄️

Winters in Lapland are mostly snowy, with plenty of freezing temperatures. Proper gear and warm clothing are essential, especially for longer outdoor activities. You can rent warm snowmobile suits, boots, and gloves for our activities through us.

We recommend dressing warmly under the suit as well: a thermal wool base layer, combined with an additional mid-layer, is ideal for staying comfortable in the cold.
