23rd Dec
Everything is ready for Christmas to come. We brought the tree home today and our kids decorated it. 😍
22nd Dec
The shortest day of the year winter solstice is nearly over and we can start to look for a light.
21st Dec
Reindeer hair is one of the thickest hairs in the world. In one square centimetres area there are over thousand individual hairs and each and every one of them is hollow like a tube or a macaroni. This way the coat creates airpockets that keep reindeer warm even they have snow on top of them. When reindeer sleep on the snow, the snow doesn't melt because all the body heat stays near body.
20th Dec
Soon is the darkest time of the year. It's the best time to sit around open fire and enjoy the warmth of it.
19th Dec
In December we get normally very much snow. Today it's been snowing all day and we have gotten about 10cm of snow.
18th Dec
Aurora Borealis, magical Northern lights 😍
We are heading towards Northern lights maximum. The sun is predicted to reach the peak of its approximately 11-year activity cycle between January and October 2024.
This is known as solar maximum brings us spectacular Northern lights shows. Last night was already super magical!
17th Dec
Reindeer have very good sense of smell. They can smell food under thick layer of snow.
16th Dec
Gingerbread cookies, Finnish Christmas tradition. Pairs well with Glögi, our Christmas drink.
My kids baked today.❤️ now the whole house smells so good. Tomorrow we decorate these, and bake little more 😄
15th December
Reindeer pellets is one of my reindeer favourite food. It's factory made reindeer food that provides them basically everything they need nutrition wise. But it's very heavy food so you have to be careful not to give too much of that or reindeer will get stomach ache.
13th Dec
Today we had a very special day. Lovely couple got married here at our farm and ofcourse Kippana the reindeer was witnessing that ❤️
12 Dec
Reindeer eyes are magnificent. Did you know reindeer eye is different on winter time and on summer. Winter eye is more like blueish color and with it reindeer can see better during the dark period. Summer eye is more like golden brown and it has good protection against UV from the sun.

Counting marks
Many of you have noticed my reindeer have these cuts on them. They are marks we make to reindeer hair when they have been counted in reindeer roundups.
Every year we count every reindeer in Finnish reindeer herding area. We have a law in Finland which says how many reindeer there can be in total, how many reindeer in certain areas and how many reindeer one person can own maximum. This counting happens in autumn time, same time when we separate those who continue their lives here from those who go to food production.
One reindeer can easily walk to more than one roundup fence so that's why we need to mark those who we have already counted. When they shed their hair next spring these marks dissappear and next autumn we can start from fresh.
10th Dec
I like this time of the year. You can save your words and say good morning, good day and good night at the same time 😃 day is 2,5h long.

How everything started with Local Lifestyle Rovaniemi?
Long before the company there was Aatu ❤️ Aatu the worlds best reindeer and my very own pet reindeer whom I bought a bit by accident.
Aatu was an orphan, bottle fed and grew up with a dog so he was basically a big dog with antlers. He was way to domesticated to be able to live out in wild so my friends at Konttaniemi reindeer Farm took care of him year around.
With Aatu I started to walk around and at some point first guests joined us. Aatu made friends around the world and was a valuable member of our family until 2020 when he pasted away.

Our farm. Our farm is also our home. My children are the 8th generation of their fathers side family living here.
The family have been farming here for example carrots. The farm has been very traditional South Lapland farm, a few cows and some reindeer. Today we welcome guests to meet the reindeer on winter time and on spring/summer time we grow and sell summer flowers.
7th Dec
Lichen, it's one of the most important winter food for reindeer. It grows on the ground. Reindeer who spend their winters in wilderness dig it under snow. These who are in fences get their lichen served.
Lichen is like chocolate to reindeer but it's also a medicine. If reindeer is poorly, lichen is basically the only food you give then. It's easy to digest and 💯 natural. My reindeer get lichen twice a day during winter months.

Happy independence day Finland!
Reindeer were playing an important role when Finland was defending it's independence on WW2.
Reindeer were used as transportation and they kept going when machines froze. Reindeer provided food and reindeer herders had good knowledge of areas where they reindeer graze.
Even today reindeer is one part of Finlands security of supply.
Hurray Finland and it's reindeer and reindeer herders 🇫🇮🦌🇫🇮

Reindeer feet are miraculous. They have kind of antifreeze system on them so theycan surviveon cold climate. Reindeer have four nails, two front and two back. It is like a snowshoe for them. Reindeer use their front feet to dig food under snow. When they walk you hear clicking sound. It's one way for reindeer to communicate. If they hear that clicking, they know other reindeer is approaching but if no click, it's better to run away.
Dec 4th
My reindeer, like most of them, spend their summers free out in the forests. Even they are kind of friends here at the farm, they go totally separated ways for summer. Reindeer have very good inner GPS and they usually spend their summers on the same areas where they have been born themselves.
Talented took this picture of Marsa and Kippana last winter.

Dear Santa, I have been very good girl, eating all my food and not teasing anyone. Can I get my very own pair of gloves? Best, Ritsa the reindeer
December 2nd
We are going towards polar night. On the most northern part of Lapland the polar night has already started. There the sun doesn't rise at all. Even the sun rises here in my home village we don't actually get to see that, because our village is surrounded by hills. So when sun rises above horizon, it doesn't clime above the hills. We have beautiful blue days ahead of us.
It's December! Happy 1st of December. Let this be our Christmas calendar. I will share a new picture every day till 24th of December which is THE day in Finland.
1.12. Our queen Kippana the reindeer. She is 4 years old reindeer who has been with me ever since she was about 6 months old. All summers she spends wild in the woods but for winter months she comes to live with me.
I am blessed with talented people around me. Here you see Kippana the reindeer and pale winter sun. The original picture (nro 2) was taken by amazing nature photographer and the other (the first one) is a drawing made by incredible .m who do her art just for a hobby.
You think I should print posters or cards of these?
Summer has officially started 🙌 my husbands uncle is cruising around with his old Zetor 🥰😍
It's beginning to look a lot like winter 👌👍
Kippana the reindeer finds these rainy days soooo boring.
Emotional day! The reindeer leave today to their home forests for summer. 😭
This is a happy day and also sad day. I don't know if I see them ever again. But that is the risk I have to take. Being in the forests for summer is definitely the best for them. I can't ever provide them as versatile nutrition they get when roaming freely in the wilderness. There they use over 200 different plants and can live proper reindeer life.
"In forest reindeer is at home"
Happy summer sweeties. Stay safe 🙏🙏🙏🙏 ❤️❤️💙💙

This virtual reindeer walk takes place on Saturday 9th of April. Send me a message and I will tell you more and give you instructions how to participate.
Last night my reindeer were looking to the horizon as if they saw or heard something. I got a feeling it might had something to do with Santa... So I got to check them early in the morning just to make sure they are still here. Maybe next year is their turn to help Santa! Merry Christmas everybody! ❤
