Cloudberries are the jewel of the forest in Finland.
They grow naturally all throughout the central and northern regions.

Rich in nutrients and antioxidants, it’s one of the most nutritious berries in the world. Eat them as you pick them, or save them to enjoy with lappish cheese or baked into a pie later. The best time of year to pick them is mid July to early August.

These are not the easiest berries to find, since they grow in bogs and swamps. Make sure you’re prepared to get your feet wet during the process, so rubber boots are a must! If you’ve ever tried cloudberries then you know they are well worth the effort.

It’s almost tree planting time again!

Every year Beyond Arctic takes time to replant and maintain forest areas in order to offset our co2 emissions.

The idea is to replant more than enough trees every year to compensate for the carbon footprint of our tours.

We are committed to sustainable travel, we think of it at every turn. Every decision we make with our products and our choices in partners is weighed against sustainability.

Join us and have the peace of mind of knowing we always strive to give more back to nature than we receive. So we can know we’re doing our part in keeping our nature in Lapland natural and free.

Here’s a glimpse back at the Midnight Sun workshop we took part in couple weeks ago.

Finnair, Visit Finland and Visit Rovaniemi invited over 100 travel industry professionals to Rovaniemi to get a feel for the Arctic summer.

Summer in Lapland offers endless possibilities to experience nature and culture, from spending time with huskies, good food, crafts and old traditions. Thankfully the sun doesn’t set for a whole month in summer, so you have all day and night to explore and get to know our beautiful city.

If you’ve ever wondered why come to Rovaniemi in summer? Here is your answer. Beautiful weather, endless summer days, and easy access to nature and walking trails. It’s an ideal place for people who love spending time in nature.

The Ranua Wildlife park is a perfect way to spend a summer day, regardless of the weather.

The park is built in middle of the forest in Ranua. So the hike around the park is beautiful in and of itself.

These wild animals live in a natural habitat with spacious fencing surrounded by Nordic forest. This is a great way to capture some amazing photos along with giving the animals the space they need to be out in the open or even hide from all eyes if they choose.

The brown bear is one animal that is very specific to summer and autumn, as they spend most of the winter months in hibernation.

Book your Ranua summer or autumn tour on our website. Every guide is a photographer at Beyond Arctic, so photos are always included.

Hyvää Juhannusta!

Happy Midsummer from Rovaniemi! Despite intermittent rain, hundreds of people showed up to witness the yearly ritual of lighting a giant bonfire on Midsummer’s eve. Throughout history bonfires “kokko”were lit during Midsummer to ward off evil spirits and give good luck for the upcoming harvest.

Along with the bonfire there was live music, food and family fun.

Celebrations across Finland will continue throughout the weekend. ☀️☀️☀️

The Ranua wildlife park is a great place to spend a beautiful summer day in Lapland.

The park is built in the middle of a forest, which gives a very natural habit for the animals. It also makes you feel more connected to the surroundings and the animals themselves.

Our Ranua photography tour includes a professional photographer to take photos or help you take your own. We’ll also share the best photos taken with you after the tour.

It is also a stunning place in winter!

The midnight sun is only a couple weeks away!
We’re already experiencing long days here in the Arctic. The sun doesn’t set until 23:30. Once it does set we still have plenty of daylight until it rises again around 2:30am. Starting the 7th of June the sun won’t set until early July! That gives us a full month of endless days to enjoy the breathtaking views of Lapland.

Our midnight sun tour takes us to one of the most iconic views in Rovaniemi. We plan to arrive before midnight so we can maximize our photography opportunities, and really take in the beautiful landscape. We’ll watch the sun dip close to the horizon, then start rising again.

After midnight we’ll have a few snacks and something to drink while we enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

Our tours start 1st of June!

Our next Guide post focuses on Sara!

Sara comes to us from Italy.
She moved to Lapland in autumn 2021. It was her childhood dream to live here! She also wanted to learn about and witness all the natural phenomenons she had grown up reading about. Her initial plan was to stay for one season but she feels Lapland gives her endless opportunities to learn and grow, so she stayed!

She came to us halfway through this last winter season, and proved to be an extremely hard working, patient and kind guide. She’s really honed her nighttime photography skills and had immediate success as an Aurora chaser even in difficult weather conditions. Her determination and patience has produced many magical nights for our customers.

“Regarding my favourite tour, I love everything which concerns hiking, doesnt matter if easy or difficult, I love to hike and feel 100% connected with the nature.”
She never wants to stop exploring. She tries to spend most of her free time outside discovering new places and challenging herself in the best possible ways.

“Being a guide in Lapland gives me the purest sense of freedom I couldn't find anywhere else. The responsibility is huge but the satisfaction and love for what I am doing overcompensates for anything, even if that means coming back home at 4am😂”

Thank you for the great season Sara!

The next time we get to see Auroras here in Lapland will be in Autumn. It’s one of our favorite times of year. The weather is still warm so the rivers and lakes have yet to freeze over. Which means Aurora reflections. Or as we like to call them, “double Auroras”!

The next Aurora season is already available for booking online starting the 19th of August! Book your autumn and winter tours on our website now!

Friday March 3rd gave us one of the strongest solar storms in the last 20 years. It was a great chance for the rest of the world to view auroras a bit closer to home.

Sadly for us in the Arctic we had far too much sunlight to view this spectacular show. Luckily our most loyal customer Bettina Van de Wetering was out with her camera that night! She’s been on over 30 Aurora hunts with us. Bettina snapped these photos on Friday night from just outside her home in the Netherlands.

A few other past customers sent us some photos the night the storm hit, we shared a few on our stories. If you have any photos from that night we’d love to share them in our stories! Just share and tag us!

We always strive to help our customers truly understand the Auroras, and learn how to photograph them. We hope you go home with enough of an understanding to chase the lights on your own if you get the chance. This solar storm gave some of you the chance to use the information you learned from us in a real scenario.

It was truly exciting for us to see the rest of the world get to experience what we get to see throughout the aurora season.

Today we want to take a minute to talk about Oren!

Oren is another one of our veteran guides.
He’s been with Beyond Arctic for the last three seasons, but he’s been in Finland since 2005. Before working with us Oren did a lot of social work with special needs children. He’s also guided husky tours in the winter and hiking and hot air balloon rides in the summer.

He’s a master light painter. He can turn any night landscape into a colorful dreamworld. Oren is also amazing with people. He really takes the time to get to know his guests. He thrives in difficult situations, and he’s good at turning any tour into a something meaningful and special regardless of the weather or conditions. He’s extremely friendly and caring. With his extensive experience in Finnish nature he’s always more than prepared for any situation. That preparedness puts our guests at ease in challenging conditions. He’s a team player, sometimes the last to leave the office at night, insuring things are all clean and set for the morning crew.

Oren’s favorite excursions are the Rovaniemi photography tour, and Explorer the Wilderness.

His favorite part about being a guide is meeting and getting to know people from all over the world.

Thank you Oren for another great season!

Today we introduce you to the most interesting fin in the world… Pasi!

This was Pasi’s first season with us. He is originally from Rovaniemi but started wilderness guiding while living near Oulu. Most of his guiding in those years took him to Swedish Lapland. He’s another perfect combination of wilderness guide and talented photographer.

His favorite tour is the Northern Lights Photography Tour. He enjoys it when it’s “little bit chilly night with clear sky. When suddenly after finding a good spot the sky explodes with dancing Auroras.”

Pasi is a master fisherman. So it’s no surprise His favorite hobby is fishing around the year. Many times he just checks an area on a map and plans a trip quickly and drives into wilderness in a far away area of Lapland. There he’ll hike in summer or ski in winter to reach remote rivers and lakes. Ask him to show you his fishing photos, you won’t be disappointed!

Pasi’s humor and personality is another thing that makes him special. He’s a guest favorite, he’s funny, knowledgeable, helpful and extremely kind in his own Finnish way to everyone he meets. He first comes across as a bit quiet, but once you get to know him you realize he’s a deep and thoughtful person.

“My best moments are when the people with me are so amazed about our nature and Northern lights that they can not say a word and maybe have a tear in the corner of their eyes”

Join us in thanking Pasi for a memorable season! We hope you have many great adventures this summer catching fish and enjoying our beautiful wilderness.

First two 📸 shot by Pasi.

Next on our guide appreciation posts we have Ville!

Ville is born and raised here in Rovaniemi.
He studied to be an electrical engineer and worked a desk job for a time before he got sick of it. So he decided to pursue his love for photography as a career. He heard about our company from a fellow guide and walked into the office one day looking for a job. Ville has been with us for one season, but proved early on to be a talented photographer with a great eye.

Another strong point for Ville is his personality. He’s got a great sense of humor. He’s quick to smile and gets along great with guests and fellow co-workers. He enjoys the fact that he gets paid to do one of his favorite hobbies and that is shown in his day to day work.

Ville’s likes the challenge of our Northern Lights Photography tour. It’s a tricky tour as it can take a lot of time and effort finding clear skies, but the amount of joy he sees from his customers on a successful night is well worth the effort. He also enjoys our reindeer farm visit because he can really focus on photography and deliver great photos to our guests.

He’s an avid golfer, he spends most of his time in the summer on the golf course, or on the tennis court.

“I like the nature a lot and it’s interesting being out with strangers and getting to know them and hearing strories about life all over the globe. The only thing that I don't like in finish nature is the cold. Pretty sure i was a spaniard in my past life because being there it felt like home. In lapland the nature is so pure and clean and if you just drive 15min away from Rovaniemi you find clean untouch nature and complete silence that is super nice.”

You can spend as much time in Spain as you want Ville, as long as you spend your winters with us taking awesome photos and making your guests and fellow guides laugh! 😂

Thanks for the awesome season! Enjoy your time on the golf course this summer!

New guide appreciation post!

Emilia is one of our most knowledgeable wilderness guides. She also happens to be a phenomenal photographer. She has been part of the Beyond Arctic team for the last two seasons.

She grew up in a small village in central Finland where she grew up in the middle of forest and nature. She has a deep rooted connection to nature, that passion has been a lifestyle for her from the very beginning. Her love and appreciation for Finnish nature is contagious and invaluable, it rubs off on everyone around her, guests and fellow guides alike. Emilia always makes her guests feel at ease with her kind and friendly personality.

She honed her wilderness skills by studying to be a wilderness and nature guide in northern Lapland. She’s been into photography for the last 5 years and she’s still studying to learn more about different fields of photography.

Her favorite excursions with Beyond Arctic are Riisitunturi and back country skiing.

Her hobbies besides photography are long hiking trips into the most remote parts of Finland, and any other outdoor stuff all year round. Her indoor hobbies are knitting and other handcrafts.

“I enjoy that I can spend my work days outdoors in the fresh air and being active. I like that the days are
sometimes physically demanding. I want to offer a memorable moment in nature for my guests, and show them the beauty of Finnish nature. I consider my work well done if I can get someone to see how valuable the nature around us is and how we should respect and protect it. And combining all this with photography is a win-win for me!”

Join us in thanking Emilia for another great season!
We’re lucky to have your knowledge and passion for nature as part of our team!

Our next guide highlight is the Mighty Teppo.

Teppo has been with us since 2018. He’s originally from Kemijärvi, about 90km north of Rovaniemi.

He’s an extremely talented, self taught photographer with a background in just about every type of photography and video production. He’s a master FPV drone operator. Does incredible night time light painting photo shoots. He’s a northern lights hunter, expert portrait photographer and an extremely skilled videographer. He’s another Swiss Army Knife in our arsenal, whether it’s professional photo and video shoots, or fun days in nature with guests, Teppo can do it all.

In his free time he enjoys Snow-kiting. He likes documentary photography in nature, and he says the best thing about the job are his fellow guides, and the people he meets from around the world.

Thank you Teppo for another great season!
