We have never skied in May before. Yesterday, for the first time in our lives, we had such an opportunity. We have plenty of snow here, and it's still frosty at night, so the conditions for skiing are great. Even better than at some points in winter.
We left the house and entered the taiga. Walking through it, we reached Lake Salmijärvi and along its shore we reached the Salmijoki river. The lake is, of course, still frozen, but the river has freed itself of ice and flows freely. We walked for some time right next to the river, enjoying the wonderful views and the absence of anyone. We have never met a human in the taiga surrounding our house. There, Mother Nature rules and no one else. We love this place and visit it as often as possible.

The snow is slowly disappearing, the rivers are getting rid of ice. Kitkajoki is now almost completely free of it, and Oulanka has gone full speed ahead in its rapids. On May 1, we reached Kiutaköngäs, which had been covered with ice for several months and now roars with enormous water. A great place, one of our favorites. In two weeks there will be plenty of water. Melting snow and thawing streams and rivers will fill huge spaces with water. Many places cannot be reached then, although we will try to take part in this magical moment of transition from winter to summer. Moreover, the polar day will soon begin and the sun will shine 24 hours a day. The nights are very bright now.

Yesterday's ski trekking to Riisitunturi National Park.

The polar night is in full swing. This is what our world looks like at 9 am. It doesn't get quite bright until around 10 am. The sun rises before 11 am and sets at 1.20 pm. I really like this time of the year.

Today we saw a record amount of water in Kiutaköngäs.

Jyrävä, the largest waterfall in Oulanka National Park. On average, more than 20 cubic meters of water flows through it every second. Every time I look at it, I can't get over the surprise that this mass of rushing water freezes in winter. And for a very long time. This year, the waterfall only shook off the ice on May 21. When you get close to it, you can feel all its power. The huge rumble of the falling water and the accompanying water dust swirling in the air make a great impression on a man. Pure power of nature.
