Your chance to visit Finnish schools! Finnish teachers! Want to give your students a chance to meet foreign people? Meet local people?
(6)

Practice speaking foreign languages? Hear about opportunities of studying/working abroad? International students! Want to visit Finnish schools? Travel to new destinations? Erasmus in Schools is a programme run by the Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus/Utbildningsstyrelsen). The programme gives Finnish day care centres and schools a chance to invite international students for sh

ort visits to teach about their home country and culture. Simultaneously it offers international students a once in a lifetime opportunity to get a sneak peek to the Finnish school system and culture! The programme is aimed at:
- all incoming exchange students, international degree students and EVS-volunteers
- Finnish daycare centres, preschools, comprehensive schools, upper secondary schools and vocational institutions

During the visits students can e.g. work as a teacher's helper, give a lecture on a specific topic, carry out a project with a class or take part in a theme day organised by the school. The visits can be conducted in any classes (languages, geography, history, home economics, sports, student counseling...) according to the student's and school's wishes. The visits last from 2-3 hours up to a single (or several) day(s) and can be conducted when and how the student and the school wishes to. After the visit the student gets an official Certificate of Participation and a reimbursement of travels. I.e. participation is absolutely COSTFREE! What's more, signing up for the programme is easy! You can find the registration form and additional information on our website:

www.erasmusinschools.fi (for students)
www.erasmuskouluissa.fi / www.erasmusiskolorna.fi (for teachers)

Looking forward to your registration!

A sign of the times: why some schools are erasing cursive writing

Getting the letters (and news) straight!
Finland caused a bit of a commotion last autumn, when some primary school started suppressing handwriting lessons. Check up this video explaining the reasons of such decision, with pros and cons of current ways of writing.

Is the writing on the wall for cursive script? The advent of digital technology has raised searching questions in the academic world about the teaching of handwriting. With society in general and young people in particular increasingly using mobile phones and computers to communicate the keyboard is…

Opettajan työ edelleen vetovoimainen (tiedote 3.2.2015) — Koulutuksen tutkimuslaitos

Teacher’s profession in Finland is again a highly popular career choice, as this profession is perceived as attractive and prestigious, says one of the latest research from the University of Jyväskylä! In general teachers are satisfied and the factors influencing the choice are good school's memories, work community’s atmosphere, changes in their work, problematic work situations [when coming from other degrees than education], pay levels, and opportunities for self-development.

Opettajan työ on edelleen vetovoimainen ja arvostettu. Opettajat ovat hyvin sitoutuneita ja tyytyväisiä työhönsä. Niinpä myös opettajien poistuminen opetusalalta on Suomessa vähäistä. Ongelmana on opettajien vähäinen täydennyskoulutus ja uusien opettajien perehdyttäminen työhönsä.
