Today is a very important day for all of us - International Day of Forests! 🌲🌳🌴

Preserving and responsibly managing these forests is crucial for a balanced and sustainable environment. ♻️🌍

Here are 5 points why, especially coniferous forests in Finland, are vital for the environment 👇

1. Carbon Storage: Trees absorb carbon dioxide, helping combat climate change. 🌲

2. Biodiversity Hub: They provide homes for diverse plant and animal species, supporting overall ecosystem health. 🪲🍄

3. Oxygen Producers: Trees release oxygen, ensuring a breathable atmosphere for various life forms. 🌬️

4. Water Balance: Forests regulate water cycles, preventing soil erosion and maintaining water quality. 💦

5. Climate Stability: They regulate local and global climates, influencing temperature and humidity. 🌡️

In addition, forests offer recreational spaces, and many Finns find it important to spend time in the woods. 🏕️

One of our core values is to bring people to the forest and show how magical a place it is! We will continue our work towards the environment, promoting sustainable travel, and encouraging all of you to nurture your connection to nature and forests. 😌💚

Play of light and shadow on the icy path. 🌞

It’s a confusing time of the year when we have sunny days that feel like spring but still carry a frosty touch. When you look out of the window, the sun encourages you to wear a pair of sneakers and pull out your spring jacket, but the moment you step outside, the crisp surprise of late winter reminds you to wear warm clothes still. ❄️

However, nature is beautiful as always, inviting us to feel the late winter/early spring spirit and experience its slow awakening. 💛

Happy Women’s Day! 🌸

Today, we celebrate all the incredible women around the world and acknowledge the hard work many of them do every day for a living.

Let’s remember that the journey toward equality between men & women is ongoing. We must continue supporting women to make this world a better place for all! 💪🌍

Our evergreen forests in Finland maintain their vibrancy all year round, even underneath the snow. 🌲❄️

The secret lies in the resilience of their conifers. This unique trait keeps our forests green, making the surroundings beautiful with or without snow. ✨

Dead standing trees, known as “kelopuut” in Finnish, are aged, lifeless trees that stand tall in northern forests. 🌲

Their significance lies in fostering ecosystem diversity, providing habitats for various plants, fungi, and insects. 🌱🪲🐛

Additionally, they serve as iconic elements of the northern wilderness, narrating tales of their long lives and environmental changes. 🍃🍂

Winter forests are full of life, even though it can seem like everyone is asleep. Jeff is a master at finding signs of life around us, whether it be animal trails in the forest or a woodpecker singing quietly in the background. 🐾🎵

He can also find frozen berries under the blanket of snow or from the juniper trees. 🌳😄

Not long ago, we discovered a dead deer in the forest (with wolf trails not far from it 🐺), now reduced to just a skeleton (last picture)—a sign that much wildlife has feasted around the deer. 🦌

What do you look for in nature? Do you focus on small details or admire the bigger picture? 😊

Let is snow, please! ❄️
Here are few facts about snow:👇

❄️ Snow is not actually white; it appears white because it reflects all colors of light.

❄️ Snow plays a crucial role in Earth’s climate by reflecting sunlight, helping to regulate temperatures.

❄️ It is a great insulator, keeping the ground beneath it warmer than the air above during winter.

❄️ Snow provides habitat and shelter for various animals during the winter months.

❄️ In Finland, we have a name for almost every different kind of snow: “tykkylumi,” “räntä,” “loska,” “kuura,” “puuterilumi,” “hankilumi,” “höhhölumi,” just to name a few.

Do you enjoy the snow, or do you feel like we have it too much? 😅😌

Warm food is a must on a chilly winter day. 😋

You might have noticed our love for smoked salmon soup, but on this particular hike and sauna tour, we’ve got something special: “put it in the pan” – fire-grilled vegetables with Finnish sausages. 🔥🍴(not to forget the famous Finnish mustard!)

This dish is delicious and satisfying, ensuring we have the energy to hike back and enjoy the sauna. 😌 It’s also a delightful change not to have the same food on every tour. So, if you book two or three tours with us, you’ll get to try something new each time. 🐟🍗🍅

Also, we make sure our food is good for the environment by using Finnish, local, and organic ingredients whenever we can. ☺️

Another cold winter experience is to walk over the frozen lake! ☃️

When the cold temperatures arrive and stay long enough, the lakes start to freeze over. It’s recommended to go onto the frozen lake only when there’s a solid 10 cm of steel ice. 🧊

Never go on the lake unless you’re certain about the ice thickness, and never go alone! Safety comes first, even before the adventure. ☺️

Embracing the winter chill in December! ❄️

The snowy landscapes and cold temperatures are enchanting, but staying warm is key! 🧤🧣

👉 Layer up for flexibility – you can always remove a layer if you start feeling too toasty.
👉 Don’t forget the hat; it’s your secret weapon against escaping heat!
👉 Keep your fingers and toes warm with gloves (preferably mittens) and warm winter footwear.

With temperatures potentially dropping to around -20°C next week in Helsinki, it’s time to gear up! Pack all your warmth essentials for a cozy and enjoyable visit. Are you ready for a winter adventure? 🤭

Our awesome guide, Helena, will be taking care of all the brave travellers visiting Helsinki this November and we could not imagine a better person to do so. 💨🍃

A greeting from Helena:

“There are many jokes about November being the most hardcore month concerning bad weather. Let’s not worry too much about that.

I see it as a perfect opportunity to channel our inner strength ’sisu’ and enjoy all of natures temper. Also, nothing feels better than sitting by the fire and eating a heartwarming soup when it’s Arctic outside.

Remember, cold is just a state of mind! Hope to meet you soon. 😊”

Interested in finding your sisu? Book now your spot for November weekends. 😎

What is Taiga Times?

Taiga Times was founded by a Finnish-Canadian couple whose passion for the outdoors comes from discovery. In Finland we don’t have ancient temples or modern skyscrapers. What we do have is pristine unspoiled wilderness with thousands of lakes. It would seem that we have one of the last slices of true wilderness in Europe. 🌲🌲🌲

Our greatest travel experiences have come from the wilderness and we want to bring our guest there to share this experience together. Finland is known for its nature and it’s everywhere, even in the capital city of Helsinki. Still, it can be a bit difficult for travelers to explore nature by themselves especially if they would like to visit more off the beathen path destinations. 🌿🌳🌱

We want to show you our beautiful home and be there with you to make it a safe, amazing, and authentic nature experience which you will remember for the rest of your life. Our guided tours from Helsinki are designed to be easily joined and we also offer customized private tours.

We have hand-picked all our destinations to make sure that you will get a real authentic nature experience. Let’s discover nature together!
