👉 Discover the Legend of the
Sawa-i-Lau caves in Fiji 😲

From the ten-headed snake God to romantic young love, Fiji’s Sawa I Lau Caves are steeped in legend and beauty.

It is said they are the home of the snake God Uluitini, described as an entity with 10 heads, nine of which take on the form of snakes and the last, of an exceptionally beautiful human with a jewel-encrusted on its forehead.

Folklore also claims that two fish and an eel reside here. Maintained by the cave’s magic, they do not grow or age.

These remote islands were made famous from the The Blue Lagoon, a movie that launched the acting careers of Brook Shields and Christopher Atkins back in 1980.

This popular flick also drew attention to the rugged tropical beauty of the Fijian islands.

As well as being home to this Hollywood romance, the caves were once the site for another love story.

According to local tradition they had been the hiding spot for a young chief and his bride, who were to be married, in spite of a rival chief. The young man brought food and water daily to his bride’s hideout until the couple were able to escape to a neighbouring island where, reportedly, they lived together happily ever after.

Although the young lovers are long gone, some locals believe the sacred cave continues to be the home to Uluitini.

There are 3 caves located on Sawa- i-Lau, each with its own myths and legend. All of the 3 caves are beautiful to explore, it is highly recommended that you come prepared for snorkeling. To enter the first cave, you have to dive under the water and swim through a tunnel in order to enter it. Snockerling in the cave is an experience on its own, as the water is crystal blue and you will be able to see where you’re going and the beauty of the caves below sea level. In the first cave you will see two different chambers that you can go through. In the first chamber you will notice its high ceeling, where there is an opening, where light shines through the ceiling. On bright Sunny days, the light, gives a majestic and earthly feeling to the cave that adds to the caves beauty. In the second chamber you will see the cave has low ceiling that makes it a intimate setting that many enjoy. The second cave, known to the locals as “Qara ni Bukete”(Gahrah knee Booketar) translated as Pregnancy Cave, with the legend that in the olden days if someone was lying about their pregancy, they were taken to the cave to find out for sure. Legend has it if the girl was pregnant she would not be able to go through the entrance, as it would be too small for her no matter her size, whereas if she wasnt she would easily enter the cave. The third cave is locally known as “Qara ni Kasivi” (Gahrah knee Carsyvie) translated as called the Spitting Cave. In the third cave, the sound of a spit landing on the water is like to a exploding bomb whereas if you throw a stone, it will barely make a rippled sound.
Exploring the Sawa - I - Lau Cave is a must do if you ever visit Fiji as it is a sight and experience like no other.

Naihehe Cave

Visit Naihehe Cave Fiji

Naihehe Cave is Fiji’s largest subterranean cave system and used by the last known cannibal tribes in Fiji, in the mid-19th Century. It is situated deep within the “Salad Bowl” or farming region of Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island. In the past to reach the cave, you had to float along the Sigatoka River on “bilibili” bamboo rafts to a trail on which you hike 15 minutes or so to the cave’s entrance, – all in view of a stunning panorama of Viti Levu’s.

Naihehe means ‘The place to get lost’, which proved to be prophetic for the villagers in 1743, when 100 of the Sautabu people hid in the cave for 79 days, while marauding cannibal tribes scoured the valley for any unsuspecting farmers. Legend has it that no one can go inside the cave without seeking their permission and blessings from the Bete (priest) or true to the meaning of Naihehe, one will get lost if they venture into the cave by themselves. The Tribe never worried about their food source. If they were hiding up in the cave for a long time, they had freshwater prawns and fish. At the top of the Naihehe Cave, accessible by their secret entrance were yams, fruits and other root crops.

The cave itself is 170m long and the entrance being under a low rock overhang and requires some knee-high wading through a gentle creek. With only flashlights and lanterns to light up the cave, you will be left in awe as you realize that you are about to explore one of Fiji’s greatest treasures. Further in, you crouch down in a low passage. Beyond is a vast, cathedral-like chamber with strangely evocative silica blanket formations and mounds of calcite that resemble the shape of a women’s reclining body and a man’s weathered face. There is another low passage that is also known as the “pregnancy gap”, legend has it that if a woman was to hide her pregnancy, she would not be able to pass through the passageway.

Naihehe Cave was once a fortress for a cannibal tribe and still contains a cannibal oven, a ritual platform, the sacred priest chamber and other reminders of its cannibal history. Notable for their massive size and unusual natural characteristics, the caves also feature escape routes high up on the cave ceiling.

The Christian influences found in the Naihehe Cave stem from early colonial times when missionaries arrived in Fiji, bringing with them the Christian religion. At the time, there were just 12 chiefs in Fiji; the paramount Chief of Nadroga who was the first to convert to Christianity, before commanding all his people to do the same.
