I rarely do tours now, but my nephew Laurie Singh who is studying at ANU in Canberra had friends visiting and I felt I ought to do the tour, this was my group two from Indonesia & one from Mexico. It’s always fun for me to do tours especially with students as they ask critical questions about race relations, coups culture & poverty. It was a great conversational tour. This was the group at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Suva.

As I wait for the staff at the National Archives of Fiji library staff to bring me information on the establishment of the Suva Bus Stand I been reading The Fiji Times May 2000 issues. I was sidetracked by comic strips of the time.

Hargar the Horrible & Ginger Meggs were my favorites.

Walking Tours Suva is about visiting the past from a lived experience, now looking back at the time before smartphones & the internet I experienced the world through print based media. Through books, magazines & newspapers.

Whist my partner & I was doing our Monday morning home admin runs, we stopped at the Curry House for some bara (crunchy deep fried lentil patties) & bumped into the owners Mr & Mrs Morris, they’re the old Suva guard. They also own Ashiyana Restaurant Fiji & are were familiar faces in the city. They spend a lot of their time traveling & are rarely in Suva.

They’ve just returned from being in India for a couple of months & they make up the old Gujarati guard of business owners that were familiar faces in the city, now their business are for me like landmarks & incredibly successful.

The Gujarati owners in the old days were very present in the city and were the characters that made up the diverse tapestries of stories that Suva is, they employ managers now & are rarely seen around town.

It was good to see them this morning.

Even though I was an adult in the year of 2000 at the time the coup happened, & was working at a local NGO in the following years when two more coups took place, it is difficult for me to recall that time in a clear way. I have taken time since the beginning of this year reading at the Suva City Carnegie Library & here at the National Archives of Fiji about these events that took place to help me better understand what happened and from different perspectives. These reading help shape how we tell the story of this complex city I call home.

It is so difficult to find this book locally and I was so happy to see this at the National Archives.

There was 4 in the beginning of the tour but two had to leave hr way through, 3 of our guests are new Australian Volunteers Program reps beginning their work here in Fiji, & Diana (holding her hat) is here visiting from Australia & staying with her son that’s working at the Australian High Commission. Tours are slow going these days as it’s so darn hot, Jim offers our guests alotta breaks a slight reprieve from the crazy hot days we’re experiencing.

Amidst the absolute intensity of this weeks bird watching training up in colo-i-Suva trusty Jim Raiwalui has been running tours. This couple Travis & Amber a couple celebrating their 25th Anniversary at the Royal Davui Island Resort ~ Fiji did a big Suva day guided tour with us! They were saved from the relentless heat by taking breaks at cafes & driving to different parts in the city in their fancy car.

The first sugar mill of Fiji:

In 1872, Brewer and Joske built the first sugar mill of Fiji in Suva.

About 640 acres of cane were planted on the site, which is near the current site of the Government Buildings.
