In 2020, we recorded our sharpest ever economic contraction of 17.0 percent followed by a further decline of 4.9 percent in 2021.
All of you in this room, went above and beyond in our recovery and in 2023, we estimate an 8.2 percent growth – meaning our recovery is complete as the economy returns above 2019 levels of GDP by the end of this year.
We also received a record number of visitors – surpassing 2019 figures by 4 percent – a testament to the indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication of our tourism professionals.
Tourism continued to be the driving sector for investments with a pipeline of $1.3 billion projects underway. Last week, I was at the opening of Waya Island Resort.
This was once an idea borne out of the principal owner’s father, Noah, who had an engineering business in Lautoka in the 1970s and 80s where he grew a passion for Fiji.
And most recently, we welcome Hari Punja Group of Companies announcement in a 258-room hotel project in Wailoaloa.
Other investments are coming in thick and fast: To name a- few,
1. FIJI Water expansion opening in the next two weeks and their expansion into commercial agriculture
2. Two more 6 to 7 stars properties to begin construction in June
3. Two Israeli commercial agriculture companies
More will follow and in tourism, we don’t subscribe to any suggestion that our economy is not performing.
