Talanoa Treks Showcasing Fiji's stunning interior - its dramatic peaks, sparkling rivers & rich culture

Exploring the heart of Fiji

We're a new, small scale tour operator providing guided multi-day group walks through Viti Levu’s interior, working in partnership with local communities. We will take visitors off the beaten track to experience Fiji's interior - its dramatic peaks, pristine forests, sparkling rivers, unique history and rich culture. We give tourists the opportunity to experience the n

atural environment in the interior of Fiji and engage in a genuine cultural experience. We do this by partnering with rural communities and, through a sustainable business, provide them with a source of revenue that will contribute to their own development objectives. At our core... we're about going walking and giving people an experience they will treasure forever.

Last weekend, our Suva-based team, swapped the highlands for the ocean as part of the Business House Outrigger Regatta. A great opportunity to spend time on the ocean and delighted to have Lee-Anne, a Duavata Collective director, as our steerer for one of our all women-paddling teams :-). We will have the Talanoa Treks team back from the interior from our next regatta in a few weeks. An important reminder of the value in being active stewards, the connections from the interior to the ocean health, and the team work required to ensure we are all paddling in the same direction. Vinaka vakalevu Natalie and Isireli for joining us on our trip last week. There is so much history in the highlands and it is our absolute privilege to connect guests to communities and their stories. Coming off the back of the Oceania Athletics in Suva, we also had lots of talanoa about it being a perfect place for middle and long distance running training! We're fully booked in July, have a few spaces remaining in August and have added more dates for Sept and October. Get in touch to join us in 2024! Tourism Fiji

The talanoa last week, to coincide with World Environment Day, centred on our amazing biodiversity. The cloud forests of Tomaniivi contain so many treasures. This orchid, likely Calanthe ventilabrum, is found in cloud forests in PNG, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Samoa and Vanuatu at elevations of 580 to 1700. Vinaka Guided Walking Tours, Suva !
We’re currently half way through our first Intrepid Travel trip of the year, taking these guests on a full tour of Viti Levu. Thanks for joining us!

First Intrepid Travel tour of the season a cool bunch of cats, we spent the morning walking around the city talking, laughing and even made a supermarket stop for a toothbrush that turned into an intercultural class about the great Australian chocolate biscuit called TimTams lol I handed them back to Jake Taoi the crew from Talanoa Treks at the Fiji Museum where all our tours end :)

Our Trip Leaders Ben Semira and Jake Taoi recently facilited our week long guide training programme in our 4 partner villages. Have a read on how it went 😊

By Ben Semira, Trip Leader and Community Liaison Lead, Talanoa Treks Our hiking season starts in mid-April for good reason! The March rain meant that I had an extra unplanned night in Nabalesere during their guide training thanks to a flooded river crossing.  During our off-season, as Trip Leaders,...

Recently our trip leaders Jake and Ben facilitated our 1 week guide training programme for 42 participants from our 4 partner villages; Navai, Naga, Nabutautau and Nabalasere.

Our programme takes participants through both theory and practical sessions and gives everyone an opportunity to complete the full Highland Escape hike. Some topics covered include our safety management plan, challenges of guiding, conservation of the environment, trip planning and storytelling interpretation.

Continuing the International Women's Day Theme - Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress. A huge shout out to these strong women pushing boundaries within the adventure tourism space in Fiji. When Talanoa Treks was born, 10 years ago, one of our core values was inclusion and with support from the Market Development Facility and Women's Fund Fiji we were able to do some of the critical foundational work needed to ensure that we created opportunities for women within their community businesses, not just as the amazing hosts and chefs that they are, but also as hiking guides. A big vinaka vakalevu to Tevita Seruilumi, who supported the integration within our guide training of key sessions designed to encourage the necessary discussions and reflections within each community of some of the barriers and challenges that different groups face in accessing opportunities and how we can work together to address them. This is Day 2 of our guide training and we're excited to see experienced guides mentoring new guides ahead of our 2024 hiking season. Tourism Fiji

This week, we'll be celebrating the International Women's Day theme-Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress by highlighting some of the work we do with women changemakers. As a small social enterprise it is part of our core values to share our experience with others and supporting the yher Pacific Islands sustainable tourism accelerator is such a rewarding part of our work at Talanoa Treks. This group of powerful women are creating incredible experiences and we're so proud to be able to join them on their journey to create more impact for their communities.

Last week we were excited to be featured in Vogue alongside some of our friends from the Duavata Collective.

We believe that tourism can be done sustainably and we try our very best to practice what we preach. Thanks Vogue for highlighting many sustainable options when visiting Fiji.

The beloved tourist destination in the South Pacific is leading the charge on sustainable travel.

What an honour to be recognised amongst Fiji’s very best last night at the Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards. We are so thrilled to have been nominated in two categories, receiving bronze in the “Specialised Tour Service” category while the showstopper of the night went to our very own Mr Roko who was awarded the gold in the “Cultural Tourism Champion” category.

If you have visited the highlands with us, you would have likely met Mr Roko who is a fountain of knowledge about the area and one of the key drivers behind Talanoa Treks’ birth 10 years ago. We couldn’t be prouder!

Last week our team headed up to our four partner villages to reflect on the year that has passed as well as discuss the plans for the year ahead. This year we have 22 trips planned during our hiking season from May - November. We have been using the offseason to upskill and conduct training sessions but we cannot wait to welcome back guests to the Highlands of Viti Levu. May cannot come soon enough, see you soon guys!

The yellow oriental paper wasp (Polistes olivaceus) busy working around their nest.

In Fiji, we call them Pi, but be careful not to say this out loud while hiking with Fijians, reflex reactions may include running away or erratically ducking and weaving for cover.

The yellow oriental paper wasp was most likely accidentally introduced to Fiji, but have adapted well and during cyclone season (November - April), they make their nests closer to the forest floor so they don’t get blown away.

If you’re hiking Fiji in the offseason, make sure to watch out for these guys!

Nice mangoes 🥭 During our off-season we get to indulge in the juicy delights of mango season. Whilst our hiking season from May to November doesn't coincide with mango season, you will be lucky enough to sample some of Mr Roko’s homegrown sugar cane on your arrival into Nubutautau village. Sweetness comes in many forms in Fiji.

Starting 2024 with intention! There is only one way to approach some parts of the Sigatoka Sand Dunes and that's to pretend you're a rugby player and attack them 🙂. We LOVE this place - a must-visit National Trust managed site and one of the only protected national parks in the country. Their rangers are incredibly knowledgeable and are doing amazing work to regenerate and protect the site from multiple threats. The small museum at the visitor centre is also very informative. Vinaka vakalevu National Trust for all that you do to protect this critical site of cultural and natural heritage for all of us to enjoy. Tourism Fiji

Monday 11th December is International Mountains Day, which we were reminded about via a post from Lukasz Warzecha (who took the photo of Tomaniivi below). Our mountains are critical. Tomaniivi is unique cloud-forest and home to many endemic plants and birds. It is also an important watershed and the source of many of Viti Levu's rivers. To climb Tomaniivi is to immerse yourself in life - all around you things are growing, changing - and for a few hours hikers are privileged to share this beauty and become part of it. We've put together a DIY page to help you experience this amazing part of Fiji https://www.talanoa-treks-fiji.com/mt-tomaniivi-diy-options/ Tourism Fiji

Our Story - Exploring the heart of Fiji

Talanoa Treks is Fiji’s only dedicated hiking company. It’s the product of friendships created over nearly a decade exploring Fiji’s remote interior and getting to know people living there.

We run treks in partnership with rural communities and locally owned and managed lodges to create a mix of great walking and authentic culture. These communities are why Talanoa Treks was created, and we work together to ensure that the treks are great for you and great for them.

Our multi-day treks take hikers off the beaten track to experience the true heart of Fiji. We escape the beach and visit waterfalls, walk through forests, climb Fiji’s highest mountain, wade rivers, cross open grassland, and stay in remote villages.

We support the communities to provide trekking guides, host hikers and provide meals and accommodation. The land we walk on is their land, their vanua, to which they have an inalienable connection. We believe it’s only right for them to show guests where they live, farm, hunt and fish.
