What will 2025 bring? For us, we really hope we can finish a lot more work at La Cloche so that we can offer a few more facilities to guests. That means a busy Spring but after a very relaxed Christmas break, we’re looking forward to starting more renovation work soon.
Meanwhile best wishes for a wonderful New Year.

What’s in a name? Why ‘La Cloche’? The Bell

To explain I need to tell you a little about the house. The house was originally a coach garage, there is still the old ‘pit’ in the garage and if you look closely you can see the original lintel for the garage doors, much bigger than the ones we have today. After the war the house was built on top of the garage, hence the topsy turvy layout with most of the accommodation being on the first floor.
What does this have to do with the name?
During the Second World War, and as the Germans occupied the country, they requisitioned all the metals they could, to be melted down and used to help their war campaign. To save the church bell, some young men from the village rescued the bell and hid it in the pit, there it stayed for the remainder of the war. Bravo à ces jeunes hommes!
A neighbour gave me a copy of a newspaper article that explained what had happened, with photos of the men involved (at the time of the photo, in their 70s/80s). I’ve since put the article in a ‘safe place’, so safe that I now can’t find it! When it does turn up we shall frame it and hang it in a place of prominence.
So, to pay homage to those young man and to remember the story, we have named the house La Cloche.
