I have, for the last 40+ years, been a keen and active birdwatcher and for the last 30 years or so I have been a wildlife guide and a tutor, teaching people how to identify birds and showing them how to get more from their hobby. Birdwatching holiday destinations have included Scotland, England, the Belgian Ardennes, the Jura, the Camargue and the Cevennes & Grands Causses, the last three being in

France. Working as a wildlife guide in the Cevennes & Grands Causses for 15 years opened up a new opportunity as an author, when I was asked to co-write the Crossbill Guide to the Cevennes & Grands Causses. The area is one of the most diverse for wildlife in France with something to interest everyone. From wild orchids and wildflowers, through dragonflies and insects to birds and butterflies. I now share my time between Belaye in the Lot, France, and Beverley, East Yorkshire. Although now retired I still run wildlife outings in France and birdwatching/wildlife courses in East Yorkshire.

BIRD AND WILDLIFE COURSES in EAST YORKSHIRE. Starting in 2025, I am offering a series of trips to various sites in East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. The courses are suitable for everyone, from beginners to experts, novices to enthusiasts, and everyone inbetween. I am based in Beverley and have been a wildlife guide/wildlife holiday operator/author for more than 30 years and several people have intimated that they would welcome something like this, so here it is! A photo from Thursday morning. While trying to photograph dragonflies at the ponds, North Cave Wetlands, I noticed a Great Diving Beetle which appeared to be swimming while holding on to a piece of dead reed or wood. I snapped a few record shots and thought no more of it until I looked at them on the computer. I was shocked to see that the 'dead reed' was in fact a dead Great Crested Newt! I know that these beetles are voracious predators and will take tadpoles and small fish, but this one had killed and was eating a fully grown newt. Please excuse the poor quality image - I only wish I had realised what was going on and perhaps tried for some better pics.
