Dear Soller Friends

Tuesday May 4th 2021 and sunny

Every day, for 14 months I have written you a letter. From the depths of the first stage of our pandemic to today. My aim was to write daily until the pandemic was over. In those days I thought it would take about three months. How very naive I was, as was the rest of the world. We could never have envisaged how long Covid control would take.

So what’s to do about it? The letters have changed to being a slow account of change and counter change and still no end in sight. I throw in a bit of personal, the occasional rant and then glimpses into our Soller way of life in these unusual times. You tell me that you want me to continue and so I will. In fact, one kind reader sent me this message which is just beautiful and is one of the many reasons I will continue…

I have really never thought of myself as a Poet and I am humbled that anyone could think that.

So onto a glorious May Tuesday and I am off for a birthday lunch today. There are a lot of birthdays around and to be able to meet up, even in a socially distant way is wonderful. The art of conversation is slowly being relearned and we can all have a laugh again.

I was wearing a jumper today when all around had switched to T shirt mode. Need to sort the wardrobe out I think. Shall I take the electric blanket off the bed? No, I don’t think so…

Dear Soller Friends

Sunday 8th November 2020 and a cloudy start

So many words will be written today and from my little dot in the ocean I say ‘Thank God’. Donald Trump versus the Team has been how I have viewed the last four years. A figurehead is needed in many walks of life. The Boss, the Head, the Leader, the Pope, the Vicar, the Millionaire owners of large companies and the list goes on. Individualism is encouraged, up to a point and mavericks do go on to do great things.

When it comes to the President of the United States he has to be a figurehead surrounded by the team. The team who give him advice and who allow themselves to be the sounding board, are crucial.

The past four years have heard little of the Trump Team other than when they were fired or walked out of the White House. This President was not motivated by the greater good but a personal desire for glory, adulation and a firm belief that, in all things, he was always right.

That time is now done, finished, over, and the ripples of the decision are washing over the world this morning. Some feel we needed to look into the abyss of the past four years to learn to ‘get real’ again.

‘Real’ is the collective work for the greater good. The pandemic is the place to start as without the physical and mental health of the nations – little good can come.

Let’s hear it for the Team in the USA and in all other decision making situations. Team Biden will have a great start with Kamala Harris and there is no doubt that the Obama’s will play their part. The future, no matter how difficult, suddenly looks bright again.
