WHATS LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT ?
What sets us apart from other companies is that we’re a guide run, guide led operation.
Myself and Tomas are currently working as leaders in some of the most beautiful places in the world.
We are not sitting in an office Monday to Friday and in the mountains with people on the weekends or sending other part time guides out into the wild.
We are full time, fully qualified international trekking guides and that we think makes a difference.
We love the wild so much that we make our office out in the wild and share that passion, expertise and consistently practiced guiding skillset into all our work.
I’m taking this picture right now after hiking high in the Norwegian fjordlands all day with clients. Tomas is currently running trips through the alps and just back from several in Ireland.

WHAT MAKES A CITIZEN OF THE WILD ?
When we first thought of creating an adventure company we sat down to find a name.
We wrote out what we hoped to be and found ourselves talking about where we started.
We remembered the moments of unbelievable excitement when we really began exploring the magic of the reeks at home with each other and friends.
We spoke about our community, that became inseparable, inspired by the wild places at we visited.
How an evening in a pub after hiking, climbing or strolling in the hills was one much more connected than other evenings.
How because of that magic feeling, we just couldn’t stop learning how to explore.
The skills and experience we gained and how now we wanted to share that with the world.
That the nation we belonged to didn’t have borders or need it’s citizens to come from any one place.
That it was the wild that led us.
And like the rain that often soaked us to the bone.
The name fell. We would be called the citizens of the wild. And anyone was entitled to our passport.

Today our students had the pleasure of meeting the inspirational Killian Buckley. Killian was kind enough to share his remarkable life story. It was filled with unbelievable tales of his trials, tribulations, resilience and calmness he has found through nature and climbing mountains.
Students were in awe of some of the stories he told of climbing dangerous mountains and what he learned about himself in the process. If our students are as attentive in class as they were to his powerful words, the future is very bright. He was truly an inspiration, role model and unafraid to share the ugly parts of life that we are not always keen to share. "

The sun is out and our guides are back to school, in the best possible way!
A big thank you Chamonix Nature Nerds for putting on an awesome course on the flora and fauna of the Alps.
For the nerdy nature lovers out there check out the purple gentian in the second photo.
If you look closely you see an ant farming little critters called aphids, all on the stem of the plant! Yes you read that correctly!
The ant protects the aphids by fighting off predators such as ladybirds, and in return the aphids give the ant a sugary snack as they eat and excrete the plant! It's crazy what's going on under our noses on the trail!
Tour de Mont Blanc trips will be coming to Citizens of the Wild in 2023.
Soon the clouds will clear and all will be revealed.

The path we travel as we approach is Everest Base Camp is exciting and varied. As we rise up out of the lower foothills, we pass over suspension bridges which span great gorges, carved out by the Lobuche river. It is born from the meltwater which flow from Everest's great glaciers and the surrounding peaks.
Water with the energy of the world's giants, flowing toward, and feeding the people of this beautiful country in the valleys below. This is life giving stuff and as we pass over it, we will be feeling very much alive.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE
The buddhist teaching of "Shoshin" is all about developing a beginner's mind and releasing your inner child.
This concept is all about dropping our expectations and preconceived ideas about something and seeing things with an open mind and fresh eyes, just like a beginner.
That won't be hard in a place as unique and delightful as the Khumbu valley.
Children will run to greet you along the trail with beaming smiles, while you will often be full of wonder and awe yourself.
For this land is pure magic.

"OM MANI PADME HUM"
The Buddhist mantra carved into this boulder repeatedly in sanskrit translates as "The jewel is in the lotus". They are called "mani stones" and along with the golden topped shrines called stupas follow us on our trail.
A journey to Everest Base camp is at once physical, emotional and deeply spiritual. Mani stones, Stupas and prayer flags lead us on our way, as we rise toward Chomolungma, Godess mother of Earth, whom we know as Everest.

The village of Lukla is where our trek truly begins, but the adventure will have already lifted off at Kathmandu airport where we hop on a twin prop plane, designed for flying in the vast foothills of the world's greatest mountains.
We land in one of the worlds most incredible airstrips, perched high on the mountainside and suddenly the world we enter is entirely new.
The world of sherpa people, yak and teahouse.

Over the next ten days, we will be bringing you snapshots of the Everest Base Camp Trip. These photos were taken on the first trip I guided in the region and hope to give you all a taste of the pure magic to be found there.
The photos have been generously provided to us by Darren McAteer (Doctor, photographer and new father extraordinaire), who summited Mont Blanc on a trip we organised before the pandemic put pause to our budding business.
Well, we are back now and rearing to go!
