Peaceful and relaxing, this French holiday cottage is an ideal base for exploring the beautiful Normandy countryside. Perfect for wildlife enthusiasts, we offer a range of natural history books and equipment (by arrangement). You may be lucky enough to spot rare birds and butterflies and depending on the season, swathes of snowdrops, cowslips and primroses, not to mention wild orchids and other gems. Alongside a very quiet road, undisturbed apart from the occasional tractor, there are plenty of nearby walking opportunities. You are only about one hour from beautiful beaches, including the D-Day Landing beaches. The area is steeped in history, not only from the WW2 (the lettering painted on the exterior of the cottage is in the local history book!) but Le Mesnil Imbert also features in the story of Charlotte Corday, who assassinated Jean-Paul Marat during the French Revolution. She worshipped at the church, now a ruin, just behind the cottage.
You are also in the heart of cider making country, with many lovely orchards around and opportunities to sample and buy local cider, pommeau and calvados. The villages of Camembert and Livarot are a few kilometres away and you can visit cheese making factories and museums.
Normandy is also a great place for lovers of French brocante (antique & bric a brac) markets - there are usually several in the area each weekend from summer - autumn. A brocante calendar is available for the use of our guests. For lovers of French food markets, on Monday mornings there is a fantastic market in the nearby town of St Pierre sur Dives, where you can buy anything from a tablecloth to a cockerel!
There are several beautiful chateaux in the area which you can visit, in season, as well as lovely little restaurants in the surrounding villages. Advice on local attractions is provided at the gite.
