Lyon is one of those places my wandering feet always seem to bring me back to, it is an inescapable french landscape, the capital of gastronomy and close to the mountains and Geneva it is the first barrier against the winter, favoured as a rest stop for skiers and outdoor enthusiasts in need of a rest, passed down through time i always seem to find myself lost in its streets, looking for nothing yet quickly finding all, Depending on you means of measuring if is either before or after Marseille in size and culture, the axis where all pivots between Paris and its heady mix of great and now monuments and histories, where Lyon it's a place which seems lost in time and whenever you visit you find yourself surprised by the experience, new buildings and challenging art bloom at each corner we find museums filled to the brim and a certainly more authentic french 'joie de vivre' and after just for a moment of thought we head to the 'park of the golden head' which has an open air zoo, free for children and adults alike which i am sure you will agree makes doing nothing such a productive and enjoyable task...

of course no visit to the south of France would be complete without a few days on the islands of gold, the hidden paradise of the three protected islands just off the city of Hyeres in the var, at an hour from marseille in a car and 20 mins by boat from the tour fondue we can find three islands the largest of which is called Porquerolles, this is the most developed of the three and here you can find a few small hotels and restaurants, an island where there are few cars but bikes are everywhere, a famous jazz festival during the summer and a host the pristine beaches and protected landscapes and white fine sandy beaches make for a spectacular discovery in this archipel which is completed by the sister islands of port cross famous for its wildlife and diving filled by the ile de levant an island completely naturist for the lovers of back to nature ....

although outside and sat the very end of the Cote d'Azur Marseille always feels like the hidden jewel of the french riviera, the black sheep at the end of France, but do not be afraid to explore, built of history and energy, this city is either the second or third in France depending on how you measure, but it boasts a culture like no other, situated on a coast line that is largely unexplored by the greater tribes of tourism, but is worthy or the equal of the best in the world, rugged caves and white sandy beaches, majestic hotels, world class museums and sunning local food, this makes for a welcome change from the high class and overrun cities at the other end of the coast line, as we roll towards Italy, while standing as the gate way to a more passionate Spanish influence, once a Roman city and before that Greek, now we can feel the busy north African influences, but this city remains the city of Pagnol and french by excellence...
