On our first American Normandy Tour, one of our Passengers, Mr. Randall Ross visited the site where his father, Rudy Ross landed as a gunner of a Higgins Boat in the second wave on Utah Beach on June 6, 1944. See some photos of Mr. Randall’s father and another one of himself on the beach where his father landed on D-Day. In the background, you can see the famous house with the red roof which served as an orientation point for the landing forces when their landing craft were pushed to the south by strong currents. The American troops landed a couple of miles further south than expected and they realized that they are on the wrong spot when they saw that the house is not on their left (to the south) but on their right (to the north). This was when 57-year-old Assistant Division Commander of the 4th “Ivy” Infantry Division, Brigadier General Theodor Roosevelt Jr., who landed on the beach in the first wave, eventually made the decision to “start the war from here.”

In a couple of weeks, we are going to celebrate Veterans Day in the United States. It is an opportunity to honor all veterans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Veterans Days originates from Armistice Day marking the end of World War I, which formally ended on November 11, 1918. In the U.S., the holiday was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all veterans in all wars. This day is still known as Armistice Day in France and Belgium, while the UK and Commonwealth countries celebrate Remembrance Day (or Poppy Day). Americans observe a two-minute moment of silence that day and it is celebrated in many local ceremonies, such as marches, wreath layings, motorcycle rides and other events. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 66,143 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II are alive in 2024. 131 of them are dying each day. Join us on our tours to witness what these soldiers had to go through while fighting for our freedom!

The U.S. Navy is a seaborne branch of the military of the United States. Today, it has more than 330,000 personnel on active duty and tens of thousands of reservists. Its birth dates back to October 13, 1775, when the Continental Navy was established by the Continental Congress during the American Revolutionary War. The primary role of this small fleet was to attack British supply ships and thus prevent the resupply of British forces in the colonies. After the war, the fleet was disbanded but had to be reorganized again due to pirate threat to American merchant shipping. This led to the creation of the permanent standing navy when Congress passed the Naval Act in 1794. According to the directive of the then-Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, October 13 has been designated as the official birthday of the Navy in 1972.

Channel Islands Tours - Explore our new tours!

We are thrilled to introduce our brand-new all-inclusive Channel Islands tours, namely the 10-day Channel Islands Tour and the 11-day D-Day to Channel Islands Tour. These tours are designed for people who want to combine culture and military history. On both tours, our Passengers can learn about the German occupation of the Channel Islands during World War II and combine it with a tour of the Normandy sites of American D-Day operations. These trips have a special focus on the American landing sectors and the breakout from Normandy with the first leg of our journey ending at the medieval abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel. The 11-day tour will devote an entire day to attending the annual D-Day Anniversary ceremonies.

On the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey, you will have a chance to see one-of-a-kind remnants of Hitler’s infamous Atlantic Wall. Many of them were built by the foreign prisoners held captive under inhumane conditions in the work and concentration camps on the Islands. We will also witness astonishing medieval strongholds further fortified by the Germans, such as the 800 years old Mont Orgueil Castle. During the tour, our Passengers will learn how the locals coped daily with five years of N**i occupation on these British Crown Dependencies. You will be surprised on how many levels American history and culture is linked to that of the Islands. The Islands’ natural beauty and the gastronomic delights will contribute to making this tour an unforgettable journey. This unique tour is offered only by us, so don’t hesitate to book your trip as soon as possible. Read our earlier article about the German occupation of the Channel Islands if you want to learn more before booking: https://www.beachesofnormandy.com/articles/The_Channel_Islands_in_WWII/?id=8adfe5dbf4

Feel free to browse our website to find the right tour for you.
