Performing as Juno in Offenbach’s opera, “Orpheus in the Underworld,” was an epic journey! 🎭From the whimsical tunes to the satirical twists, every moment onstage was pure magic. This lampoon of the Orpheus and Eurydice legend, first performed in Paris in 1858, not only entertained but also critiqued the political landscape of its time, with its veiled satire of Napoleon III. Performing in Berlin, surrounded by an international cast, truly made this experience unforgettable. And let’s not forget the iconic Can-can! 💃🏼🎶

Painting her Pleasure: Three Women Artists and the N**e in Avant-Garde Paris
by Lauren Jimerson
Manchester University Press, 2023
https://manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526159830/

This book examines n**es by three women: , and . Working in avant-garde Paris, these artists pioneered modern body imagery, expressing female subjectivity and s*xuality in paint. Valadon, Charmy and Vassilieff experimented with the male n**e, Black female n**e, pregnant n**e and n**e self-portrait, a genre which few artists tackled until half a century later. Contextualising their work within and against modernism, drawing parallels with later feminist artists and philosophers, this interdisciplinary book unravels the complexities of early twentieth-century gender regimes and persistent cultural stereotypes, providing an illuminating history of women, s*xuality and the body.

Is it 2021 yet? ⏳Next year, I’m launching a new program called Cultural Conversations, with the first event taking place in T-minus 7 days! On January 7th at 1 pm est, Kelsey Brosnan, PhD, an expert on 18th century art and a specialist at Christie’s will speak about the French female painter, Anne Vallayer-Coster. One of the preeminent still life painters in France in the late eighteenth century, Vallayer-Coster was one of only four women admitted to the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture at the time. She painted highly sensual still-life paintings of flowers, shells and minerals, guns and game, which are displayed in the Louvre today. With Kelsey, we will study the range of textures that Vallayer-Coster depicted, and discuss the perceived "femininity" of her subject matter and painting techniques.
The second Cultural Conversation will be held on January 26th with Guénola du Halgouët, a strategy consultant in the French fashion industry. Guénola will unveil the mystery behind Haute Couture, centuries-old artisanal crafts, and demystify the Paris fashion world. Can't wait!! 🤩
You can sign up for one conversation or both at a reduced rate (just select the Cultural Conversations 2 pack at checkout).

I recently discovered Marevna’s painting, “Death and the Woman” from 1917 is executed in a synthetic cubist style, typical of this period. The vibrant colors, playful patterns, and rhythmic forms create a joyful mood antithetical to the morbid subject of a woman in a gas mask drinking cocktails with a dead solider. Painted one century ago, the work seems eerily relevant today.

In 1883, the Impressionist painter, Claude Monet took refuge in the tranquil, tiny village of Giverny, where he devoted himself to painting and gardening. He cultivated his plants with great care while simultaneously capturing the diverse flora, shifting light, shimmering water and its reflections in his canvases. Painting his garden hundreds of times over the next forty-three years, nature unwaveringly inspired Monet until the very end of his life.

Loïs Mailou Jones, a prolific African American painter, loved Paris. She first went to Paris in 1937, while on sabbatical from Howard University, to study at Académie Julian. There, she painted street scenes, still lives and portraits in a post-impressionist style. Like other African American artists, musicians and writers who traveled to France in the early-20th century, Jones was drawn to the country’s racial tolerance, so different from her reality in the United States. Back home, she incorporated African heritage and black experience into her art, taking up the challenge of Harlem Renaissance artists. From the 1950s onward, she began visiting Haiti regularly and explored Haitian subject matter. Today, you can see her work at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC.

Tucked away in the Jardin Marco Polo, south of the Jardin du Luxembourg, The Fontaine de l'Observatoire features a sculpture by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. The four female figures represent the four parts of the world (Europe, Asia, Africa and America). The fountain was proposed in 1866 as one of the many projects under the architect, Baron Haussmann, for the reconstruction of Paris. Delayed by the Franco-Prussian war and the Commune, the fountain was installed in 1874. Two students of Carpeaux sculpted the sphere and horses. I love the embellishments - the garlands of seashells and aquatic plants around the basin, and the zodiac band around the sphere.
I’ve been admiring this fountain for 15 years. It’s located near the Sorbonne where I took art history classes as a study abroad student - an experience that changed my life. 👩‍🎓

The Louvre reopens today after nearly 4 months. Welcoming 10 million visitors a year on average, 75% of visitors are typically foreigners (the majority of whom are Americans and Chinese). Who knows when tourists will return. Until then, those lucky enough to be in Paris right now can enjoy an unusually tranquil museum.
The Louvre was established during the French Revolution in 1793. The last time the Louvre was closed for such an extended period was during the two world wars.
Typically, I spend every day in the Louvre during the summer teaching visitors young and old about art. This summer is unlike any other. I now offer art history experiences online. There’s still time to sign up for the series, “Black Heroes of Art” which starts tomorrow. https://www.laurensparis.com/black-heroes-of-art⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Feeling invigorated! I shared the untold story of Marie Vassilieff with a group of passionate and curious individuals. Although this artist was at the critical nexus of the avant-garde, today she is largely forgotten. As an enterprising founder and director of a modern art academy with an openness toward gender, ethnicity and race, Vassilieff assumed an atypical role for a woman in Paris in the early 20th century. I spent three years hunting for one of her paintings - a journey that took me to some highly unexpected places! I recounted this discovery expedition as we examined her work from private collections. It’s wonderful to have meaningful conversations about art with friends, especially during these difficult times.

A new session of Art with Friends starts this Sunday at 1 pm EST. Join us! (link in comments) 🤗

Christo is pure pleasure in a rather unpleasant world. I wish I had traveled from Ithaca to New York to see "The Gates" in Central Park in 2005. And I really wish I had been in Paris to see “The Pont Neuf Wrapped” in 1985. His art was fleeting but unforgettable.

A spectacle of colors, this gorgeous flower market is a gem in the heart of Paris. Dating back to 1808, it was one of the many upgrades Napoleon made to the city. A Wallace Fountain appears in front. These fountains were installed after the disastrous Franco-Prussian war to provide fresh drinking water for Parisians. Sir Richard Wallace, an Englishman, financed their construction. The fountain goes nicely with the metallic art nouveau pavillons built in 1900. It’s wonderful to see Parisian markets reopening! 🌸⛲️

Just launched: "Art with Friends," an interactive and engaging month-long webinar series on modern women artists (link in comments).
Working with marketing and consumer advocacy experts, I ran a successful pilot and fine-tuned this webinar series into a unique and meaningful experience. First and foremost, this is a chance to connect with people around the world and to have intellectual conversations that may be lacking during this period of social distancing. This is also an opportunity to discover art not visible in major museums. As a guide in Paris, I can only discuss what the Louvre or the Orsay choose to display. This is a chance to go beyond the walls and learn about art by women.

The material presented is the result of over five years of archival research and forms the basis of a forthcoming book on women artists and the n**e in early 20th century Paris. I spent years hunting for paintings in private collections. That discovery story forms the backbone of this webinar series.

Join us for meaningful conversations about art! Link in comments.
