All around us from now until September 27th (approximately), the sound of picking machines will become the norm, from dawn til dusk.
It is the Vendange, the Cognac Grape Harvest. The weather has taken a cool turn and we are enjoying cool mornings (9C this am.) and pleasant daytime temperatures up to the early 20's C.
This is the perfect time of year to visit the Charente, as you will see the process of picking the grapes and the trailers full of grapes on the roads on their way to the various distilleries in the Cognac region. You will also see the grape skin/seed/stem crushings being deposited in piles on the roadside to be taken away to other destinations, and you will smell them too.
Tanker trucks will follow this in about 3 weeks time, and all across the Charente River Valley and beyond you will see the steam rising from the distilleries. Its a wonderful sight on a cool, foggy morning.

Saint Simeux & Sireuil
The Charente River was used for centuries as the main trade route for farmers and vintners. Cognac barrels were shipped down river to the larger town of Cognac from the 17th C onwards in Gabarres, specially designed flat bottomed boats. Today, pleasure craft ply the Charente and marvel at the gorgeous scenery along the way. Small towns grew up along the river and today you can still find Ancient Mills, and the more modern Fisheries. It is a leisurely drive alongside the river and there are many places to stop and picnic next to the water.
Saint Emilion - Medieval City
The Medieval City of Saint Emilion sits at the cross-roads of Bordeaux, Saintonge and Perigord. 5,200 hectares grow the famous apellation from Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. It is well worth the one hour's drive from Cognac Cottages to this fabulous 'Discovery Destination'.
