Bom dia!

During the lockdown, the Musée d'Orsay presents to you every day one of the most beautiful landscapes in its collections.
Today, "Entrance to the Port of La Rochelle" (1921) by Paul Signac.

A seasoned navigator, Paul Signac painted views of harbours, by the sea and on rivers, throughout his life. He once called himself "the adventurer-watercolourist-trotter".

His watercolours are centred on the animation of the sailboats during manoeuvres and the variations of light on water. In his oil paintings, as in "The Entrance to the Port of La Rochelle", the immutable nature of the buildings contrasts with the moving elements represented by clouds in the sky, the sea waves and the passage of boats.
The symmetrical composition and the intense colours broken down into small dots, give a decorative character to this large landscape depicting one of the oldest harbours in France.

Aujourd'hui, "Les Iles d'Or" (1891-1892) par Henri-Edmond Cross..

Today's landscape: "The Golden Isles" (1891-1892) by Henri-Edmond Cross.

In 1891 Cross moved to the South of France. The islands of Hyeres, "so beautiful that they are called the Golden Isles” wrote the poet Emile Verhaeren, are observed from the beach at Cabasson, where the painter was renting a house.
He has eliminated all picturesque elements and concentrated on the effects of light on colour. The various elements in the landscape become three large bands: sand, sea, sky. the sinuous line of the reliefs adds a subtle variation.

In keeping with Neo-impressionism that he had recently begun to apply, he used rounded brushstrokes of various sizes from the dabs in the foreground to the tiny dots on the horizon, adjusting the spacing to create a slight effect of perspective. The very high horizon line is a direct reference to the Japanese art of Ukiyo-e prints.
Cross, combines the dream of an art as science with a musical, rhythmic interpretation of the landscape, in
which the colored stippling of the shimmering, magical shore verges on abstraction, while inspiring thoughts of travel.

Today, “Mademoiselle Gachet in her garden in Auvers-sur-Oise“ (1890) by Vincent van Gogh.

A dweller in Auvers-sur-Oise since May 1890, Van Gogh became friends with Paul Gachet, a doctor, painter, engraver and collector of the Impressionists and Cézanne, whom his brother Theo had recommended to him.
For fifteen years a widower, Gachet lived with his two children, Paul and Marguerite, in a house in the village with a garden. After having painted the doctor's portrait, Vincent painted that of his 20-year-old daughter, with whom he was somewhat in love.

He painted her seated on a chair, with a melancholy face, and also represented her at her piano. In early June, he realized this composition where she was shown in her garden amongst of white roses and vines. He used the same thick and sensual material to depict both character and vegetation.
