Unable to accept the defeat of France, Charles de Gaulle (a tank commander in the French army who had fought the invading German forces/Blitzkrieg) left for London on the 17th June.
After meeting with Churchill, he was allowed to use the BBC to broadcast to the French people. He made several speeches during June 1940, the first of which was on the 18th June.
His speeches offered hope 'France has lost a battle but it hasn't lost the war, and were also a rallying cry 'France is in danger, everyone fight for her'
'The flame of the resistance must not go out, and it will not go out'
Although very few French men or women heard the speeches, they are generally regarded as the start of the resistance movement in France against German repression/occupation.

Client photo from last week during one of my walking tours "Carcassonne During World War 2." Very hot in the afternoons now in Carcassonne. I am looking forward to July when the tours will start at 9.30 am rather than 2.30 pm.

Very pleased that the summer season is off to a good start. So great to have tourists back this summer after 2 years with no tourists due to COVID. Had my my first dog in a group on Saturday. Mainly British clients but also a couple from Las Vegas. They said they were enjoying the cool weather whereas for everyone else it has been unusually hot for May :-)

Victory in Europe day today. Let us not forget ALL those who died during WW2. The soldiers, sailors and airmen, the civilians and those in the resistance.

The Resistance Memorial in Carcassonne by René Iché.
An early study from 1923 for later works in stone and bronze by Iché that he called 'Wrestlers'. A version of this work became the Resistance Memorial in Carcassonne which was put in place on the Gambetta Square in 1948.

The title of my Town Trail about Carcassonne during WW2 is called Repression and Resistance. It explores the battle between N**i repression of the town and the fight back by the 'Army of the Shadows'.
You will recognise the N**i SS symbol in the word Repression but what is the symbol that replaces a letter in the word Resistance?

More great feedback. The café 'pitstop' is the latest tweak to the tour.
"......... I share an interest in the French Resistance..........so this walk was perfect for us. Paul, our guide, brought it to life with his knowledge and enthusiasm.
Our walk lasted about three hours and we also had a pit stop half way round.
I ......... know the Bastide well, but Paul surprised us more than a few times with his knowledge of the history..........
I would happily recommend this walk and Paul to you. Peter J."

Some good feedback from someone who did the town trail this morning.
"We did the tour this morning. Having lived here for two and a half years we still knew next to nothing of Carcassonne's history during WW2. We'd walked past so many things we had never noticed. The guide also tied it in with his other main historical interest, which is the various routes through the Pyrenees taken by those trying to escape Vichy France into Spain. A very interesting and enjoyable tour."
