Entrée to Black Paris Entrée to Black Paris™ invites you to take a look at Paris as a black heritage destination -- cu

Entrée to Black Paris™ tours started as four self-guided itineraries that I wrote for Discover Paris! - my husband’s and my travel planning service. As we became increasingly aware of the desire and demand of African-American travelers to Paris, we created additional walks and began providing them as private, guided walking tours. We have 13 unique walks that feature “Black Paris” - from “general”

themes such as African-American artists in Paris to tours that focus on specific persons, such as James Baldwin and Josephine Baker. We now offer our “Black History in and around the Luxembourg Garden” walk to the general public - several tours are scheduled every month and you can sign up for one online. We also provide a popular visit to the Louvre called “Black Images in European Art,” where our nationally-certified, trilingual guide provides an in-depth look at how European artists have represented black people over the centuries and how these representations changed over time. Our “Black Paris and the Myth of a Colorblind France” presentation opens your eyes to how this myth evolved and shows the many places in Paris where African Americans are publicly honored. If you are planning a trip to Paris and would like to experience our tours and activities, contact me at [email protected].

Remembering Patricia Laplante-Collins

Last night, Tom and I attended a gathering in honor of Patricia Laplante-Collins (??? - January 2019).
Along with many of her friends, we shared music, food, wine and cherished memories of her.

Black Images in European Art at the Louvre

The portrait shown here represents General Louis Charles Antoine Desaix (in civilian clothes) reading a service order to two Egyptians during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. It hung at the Louvre for three years before being sent to its current home - the Versailles Palace.

Many works at the Louvre depict Black people, and these representations evolve throughout the centuries. If you'd like to take a tour to discover them, contact us at [email protected].

Midway through the James Baldwin Centennial Year

On February 7, 2025, the Giacometti Foundation will host a James Baldwin Study Day entitled Rencontres artistiques : James Baldwin en France (Artistic Encounters: James Baldwin in France). The invitation for this event inspired me to look at what has happened in Paris to celebrate the Baldwin centennial since August 2024: https://www.entreetoblackparis.com/blog/midway-through-the-james-baldwin-centennial-year

Black fève in a galette des rois

Tom and I indulge in one galette des rois (king cake) during Epiphany each year, and we save the fève (figurine) as a keepsake. This year, we were astonished to find a fève that would seem to represent Balthazar, the Black magus. But the face of the figurine is mostly obscured by a light-colored mask that reminds me of Phantom of the Opera!

Nostalgia about Black-owned restaurants in Paris

The former location of the restaurant La Table d'Erica is along the route for the James Baldwin in Paris walk, and I passed by the other day with a study abroad group from James Madison University.

That, coupled with a conversation I recently had about freelance articles I wrote for Soul of America years ago, got me thinking about this lovely dining establishment.

Read the post that I wrote about it and other Black-owned restaurants in Paris here: https://www.soulofamerica.com/international/paris/soul-food-of-paris/

"Guillaume Guillon Lethière - Né à la Guadeloupe" at the Louvre

Guillaume Guillon Lethière was a brilliant mixed-race artist from Guadeloupe who has largely been forgotten by the professional art world. An exhibition at the Louvre, mounted in collaboration with the Clark Art Center of Williamstown, MA, brings him front and center through February 17, 2025. Read about it here: https://www.entreetoblackparis.com/blog/guillaume-guillon-lethiere-born-in-guadeloupe

"I Needed Paris" screening in Paris

"I Needed Paris" follows nine middle school photo students from Gordon Parks Academy in Wichita, KS on their Spring 2024 journey to Paris to walk in the footsteps of their school's namesake and re-imagine his fashion, portrait, and street photography during his 1950-1952 tenure as a photographer in LIFE magazine's Paris bureau.

The documentary will be screened at Restaurant 47, 47 rue François Ier, 75008 Paris on February 1, 2025.

Gregory Porter - gift wrapped

When Tom and I went to Versailles several days ago, we saw this lovely boutique that sells hi-fi equipment. What a blast from the past! Adding to our pleasure was a display of Gregory Porter's album, Still Rising, dressed for giving.

Nina Simone Aux Trois Mailletz

Paris is still decked out for the Christmas holidays!

Tom and I passed by Aux Trois Mailletz the other day and saw a photo of Nina Simone affixed to the wall of the front room. Simone performed there in 1982 and 1983. The iconic club also honors Simone with pixel art on the upper floor of an exterior wall on rue Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre.

Congrats to Teri Speight on her book, Black Flora!

ETBP friend and colleague Teri Speight (Cottage In The Court) is our "go-to" person regarding flowers and plants from the Paris landscape that Tom and I have questions about. She has channeled her passion for gardening into Black Flora, a book about Black women who work in cut flower industry.
