Edith Piaf’s Paris

France’s greatest international star was born in 1915, and taken home from the hospital to her house at 72 Rue de Belleville. In the basement of Le Gerny’s, the hotel at 54 Rue Pierre-Charron, was the cabaret where Piaf made her stage début, coining herself the nickname ‘la môme Piaf’. L’Olympia, at 28 Boulevard des Capucines, is the concert hall where she frequently performed. She lived with the boxer, Marcel Cerdan, at 7 Rue Leconte-de-Lisle. Finally, it was 67 Boulevard Lannes, where the singer spent the final years before her death. One can now find her grave at Père Lachaise cemetery.

Vincent Van Gogh’s Paris

Despite only spending two years of his life in Paris, the capital city played an important part in the artist’s journey.

Van Gogh moved into 25 Rue Victor Masse, with his brother, in 1886. Only 2 months later, they relocated to a larger apartment at 54 Rue Lepic. Both Boulevard de Clichy and Moulin de la Galette were captured by the painter during his time in Montmartre. At 14 Rue Clauzel, Vincent bought his art supplies from Père Tanguy’s shop. Meanwhile, he spent time with his friends at 62 Boulevard de Clichy, formerly known as Café du Tambourin. He also attended Fernand Cormon’s art school at 10 Rue Constance.

Do you know why it’s known as the Latin Quarter?

With the Sorbonne University at its heart, the 5th arrondissement has always been a student neighbourhood; consequently, there were many students from all over Europe in the area throughout the ages, and their common language was Latin!

Art Deco came to Paris just after 1910; this style of architecture is recognisable owing to its bold geometric forms, bright colours and highly stylised decoration. There are many examples of the Art Deco style that can still be seen in Paris now. Here we have: Casino de Paris, the restaurant Prunier, Cité Argentine, Villa Yora, the Louxor cinema, the Grand Rex cinema, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and even just some residential buildings!

Yves Saint Laurent’s Paris

The iconic French fashion designer passed away in 2008; from the late 1970’s until his death, he lived with his partner (Pierre Bergé) at 55 Rue de Babylone. The pair often dined at Prunier, the prestigious restaurant on Avenue Victor Hugo. Saint Laurent presented his first collection at 30 bis Rue Spontini, 1962. Later on, in 1974, the company moved to 5 Avenue Marceau, where one can now find the Musée Yves Saint Laurent. 21 Rue de Tournon is where the designer opened his first store on the left bank, being his first boutique to sell ready-to-wear clothing.

Hector Guimard, the Art Nouveau architect most known for his creation of the iconic iron canopied metro stations, designed 50 residential buildings; however, once the style went out of fashion in the 1960’s, many were destroyed. Only a small collection remain, of which the majority can be found in the 16th arrondissement. They stand out for their swirly asymmetrical designs.

Until the 23rd of November 2024, you can take a look at 15 pieces of Takashi Murakami’s work at Galerie Perrotin Matignon, for free.

This small collection of his recent paintings perfectly encapsulates the smiling flowers, acid colours and manga-inspired pop art that are synonymous with the artist.

Montmartre only became a part of Paris in 1860; but there is no doubt that it forms an integral part of the history of the capital city. Artists were attracted from far and wide to this picturesque neighborhood owing to the multiple cabarets and cheap lodging. To this day, Montmartre still maintains its village-like feel and there is a constant buzz about the place.

Before heading straight up to the Impressionist art at the Musée d’Orsay, first take your time to wander down either side of the central aisle on the ground floor.

To the right, you’ll find the art that followed the rules of the academies - mainly history paintings, that avoid depicting real life. Many artists found these rules restricting, this is where the left of the central aisle comes in. Down here, you’ll see artists starting to break away from historical and mythological narratives, to paint the everyday. The Impressionist movement leads on from here.

There’s an abundance of cinemas in Paris. In fact, it is the city with the most cinemas in the world.

Here we have: Le Grand Rex, which is actually classed as a historical monument. Le Champo, which is known for its famous visitors (including François Truffaut). Le Louxor, which was a cinema in 1921, then a nightclub, then abandoned, before it reopened as a cinema in 2013. Studio 28, which was the first avant-garde cinema, and Jean Cocteau’s favourite. And finally, Cinéma du Panthéon, which has been in uninterrupted operation for over a century!

Pablo Picasso’s Paris.

When the artist came to Paris, 49 Rue Gabrielle was his first studio. He later took up residence at Le Bateau-Lavoir in 1904. In 1918, he married ballerina Olga Khoklova at Cathédrale Saint-Alexandre-Nevsky and following their honeymoon, they moved into 44 Rue La Boétie. Picasso’s art was exhibited at Paul Rosenberg’s gallery at number 21 on the same street. In 1937, the artist set up his new studio at 7 Rue des Grands-Augustins - here lived here throughout the Occupation, until he was evicted in 1967. He often spent time at Au Lapin Agile, a cabaret Montmartre that is still open to this day. La Rotonde was popular among Picasso and his friends - the owner even accepted payment in the form of drawings.
