Today at midday the bells of Notre Dame rang out calling for peace in Ukraine, in unison with many other cathedral and church bells throughout France and across Europe.
The oldest and biggest of the 10 bells in Notre Dame Cathedral, baptised Emmanuel and known as 'Le Grand Bourdon', rang for 7 minutes - 1 minute for each of the 7 days of war in Ukraine. Le Bourdon is the heaviest bell in the cathedral at 13 tons and was made in 1686, sponsored by King Louis XIV himself.
This bell is not rung often. The European Association of Architects & Cathedral Works, which includes the Cathedral Saint Sophia in Kyiv says: “Through this ringing, we remember the dead of all the countries involved. With this bell, we carry in our thoughts all those affected by this war. With this ringing, we call for peace, and we will express our gratitude if the guns fall silent.
We join with them. 🙏 🇺🇦
Did you know you can visit the infamous prison in Paris where Marie-Antoinette spent her last days?
The Conciergerie, sitting on the Ile de la Cite in the heart of the city, was originally built as a medieval palace, and was once considered to be one of the finest palaces in the world. In the 14th century King Charles V decided he preferred to live in the Louvre, so the court moved out and handed it over to Parliament, to be looked after by a Concierge, hence the name.
During the French Revolution it became a prison known as the 'antichamber of death', also home to the revolutionary tribunal. In a town now full of jails, it was one of the most notorious, overcrowded with prisoners and crawling with vermin. You literally couldn’t breathe: in the worst sections a candle would not stay lit because of lack of oxygen and people really suffocated. if you got out, you generally got out, like Marie-Antoinette did, in a cart headed to the guillotine.
Want to see what the revolutionary prison cells were like and learn more about the final days of Marie-Antoinette and many others? Join us on our tour of Notre Dame's island, and we'll take you in!

The Louvre’s Pyramid is something you either love or hate. Here at Memories we like to tell you the stories behind the monuments, museums and streets of our beautiful city, and the people that have gone before us and left their mark on it. That way you can decide for yourselves, fully equipped with all the facts. 😃
If we take a longer look this now iconic structure, hated by many when it was first unveiled, maybe we can understand it a little better. François Mitterand was president of France from 1981 to 1995. In the run up to the Bicentennial of the French Revolution in 1989, he wanted to transform the city, and one of the ways he did this was to overhaul the entrance to the Louvre.
IM Pei was the architect chosen to leave his structural signature on a building that spans hundreds of years of different styles and purposes – he decided on a glass pyramid, that would be all “Harmony majesty sobriety.” For a museum who owes much of its fame to a collection coming from Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign, this has a certain symbolic symmetry to it. Further though than that, pyramids speak of perfect eternal forms, that stand firm forever in the face of change, of centuries that come and go. Finally the form might recall the tip of an iceberg, hinting at all the treasures submerged and hidden below the surface.
Pei’s pyramid, whatever you think of it, is also more than meets the eye.
If you're planning a trip to Paris and would like to learn more about the fascinating history of the Louvre, once royal palace to the kings, now home to some of the greatest artworks in the world, join us! We'd love to tell you more!

It’s been 260 days... the Eiffel Tower reopened today and we were lucky enough to be among the first in the lifts. 🤩
Seeing the tower quiet and empty over these past months has been a strange experience. The smiles on the faces of the staff and the excitement among the visitors waiting outside this morning was like a breath of fresh air. We’re not quite out of this yet, but seeing our Iron Lady come back to life brings a smile to all our faces. 💕
Our visits will start again soon! We hope you’ll join us and our team of passionate, professional guides for an in-depth visit of this fascinating and incredible monument.

FB 📽️ Join us for Episode 2 of our video series about famous French historical figures, events, sites and much more, all explained by an expert guide.
Joan of Arc - myth or reality? This week Hervé tells us about the incredible - and short - life of Joan of Arc. In the 1400's the stage is set for a mad king, 100 years of bloody war, and a 17 year old girl with no military training leading a huge army to great victories. This was quickly followed by power games, manipulation and betrayal, leading to accusations of witchcraft and her death by burning at the stake at just 19 years old.
Soldier, martyr, saint and symbol of France, the legend of Joan of Arc is enduring and powerful. Hervé tells you her fascinating story.
