The lake at Sidialles is perfect for a day out this summer- go for a swim, have a picnic, a hike round the lake to the ruined chateau, or full on action on the Aquapark and Accrobrance, the enormous high ropes course which crisscrosses the lake!

We have a green woodpecker visiting our garden this morning- he’s very handsome, lovely green back with yellow underside, black head with a bright red patch on top.
We see him regularly, but hear him all the time- a great free app for identifying birds by their call is this one:

In a couple of minutes the other day it identified swallows, blackcap, nightingale (yes, during the day!), buzzard, blackbird, corn bunting and golden oriole.

This beautiful abbey has been fully restored- it as if the monks have just left, so peaceful!

The name of our gîte is “Les Rossignols”, which means “The Nightingales”.

Steve was watching BBC news this morning and saw a report which said nightingales were now one of the most endangered species of birds in the UK, numbers have fallen by 90%.

Well rest assured, they are singing their heads off here. I recorded this on my phone through the open window just now, no picture (it’s dark😁) but turn the sound up and enjoy!

This area has a long history back to pre- Roman times.
Two thousand years ago Chateaumeillant was a town of the Bituriges tribe, taken over by Julius Caesar it was known as Mediolanum it became a hub for wine production and transport.
The old street patterns still remain, you can trace the ramparts which were built to defend the town from the Romans.

On a smaller scale, we have found Roman roof tiles in the garden: there has been a hamlet here for a very long time!

Drevant, home to a Roman theater! Remarkably well preserved- it was built between the 1st and 3rd century and originally had seating for up to 5000 people!

My daughter and granddaughter had a great afternoon here when visiting at Easter last year. Beautiful horses, helpful owner, enjoyable cross country ride!

As everyone knows, as well as welcoming your pets to Les Rossignols, we love our own too! Meet our new feline member of the family, we think he’s a short haired Maine C**n!
He was a bit grubby when we collected him from the SPA shelter at the weekend, so Steve is giving him a quick bath before we introduce him to Jessie and Nena!

Imagine a sandy beach in the centre of France- you can swim, hire a boat or canoe, have a picnic or snack from the snack bar, or if you are brave enough, tackle the enormous high ropes course which crisscrosses the lake!

Busy here getting ready for the season! More decorating, some pretty new bedding and Steve is putting the finishing touches to the new bike shelter, when finished it will even have a point for charging electric bikes.

Spring and early summer is a great time to visit if you like getting out and about in nature- on foot or bike! The area is a walker’s and cyclists paradise with miles of waymarked trails to follow.
