The Crypt was the first chapel to be built in honor of the request of Our Lady of Lourdes "Go tell the priests to have a chapel built here"
Opened and Blessed in 1866, this is the only chapel in the Sanctuaries that St Bernadette attended and saw in person.
St Bernadette's relics are present in the side chapel at the entrance of the Crypt.

The village of Bartrès (4km outside of Lourdes) was Saint Bernadette's Foster home from 1844 to 1846 and again from 1856 to 1858.
From the Grotto of Lourdes to the hills of Bartrès, pilgrims can walk in the footsteps of Saint Bernadette to visit the sheepfold where she spent time during her 2nd stay.

Candles have been lit at the Grotto since February 18th 1858. Today, candles lit by pilgrims visiting the Grotto of Lourdes remain lighting everyday, all year round 🙏

On May 1st every year in France, sprigs of lily of the valley are offered to family members and loved ones on "Fête du Muguet" (Labour Day).
It's a tradition that has been celebrated for many years, since the 16th Century.
It is seen as a symbol to bring good luck to those who receive the flowers for the year ahead.
