Musée Carnavalet - Histoire de Paris is one of our favourite museums in Paris. Every visit unveils new and interest facts about Paris.

ARTWORK OF THE WEEK 🖼️

This genre scene reflects the ‘ballomania’ or ‘balloon fad’ that swept through the Parisian public in the 18th century.

As symbols of progress, balloon demonstrations were particularly popular in aristocratic salons as well as on the boulevards and public promenades, as shown by the crowd gathered in the lower part of the painting.

They came at a time when Jacques Charles invented the hydrogen balloon, and the Montgolfier brothers were the first to fly an aerostat, between December 1782 and June 1783.

The painting captures the precise moment when the balloon rose, on 1 December 1783 in the Tuileries gardens. During the ascent, one of the two men lost his tricorn and flag.

📍 This work is located on level 1 of the museum, in the 18th century rooms.

Can anyone guess what this beehive statue is doing here?
It is located in central Paris and has served as a signpost for a honey merchant's stall since the late 19th century.
If you're looking for it, it's in the Les Halles district on the corner of rue Pierre Lescot.
