Today marks the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Channel Tunnel!
Inaugurated in 1994, it has turned Pas-de-Calais and the Opal Coast into tourist destinations in their own right.

ℹ️ The oldest tunnel project dates back to 1750, and 139 attempts have been made since the 19th century. But it wasn't until the Franco-British summit in 1981 and the Eurotunnel project that a colossal construction project was officially launched in 1986. The two nations met on 1 December 1990 for a historic moment: a handshake 100 metres below sea level!

A labyrinth of land and water, the Audomarois marshland is a corner of paradise that has been tended by man since the Middle Ages.

Despite the vagaries of the weather in recent months, nature has quickly regenerated and the marshland has retained all its beauty, ready for guided tours along the water! 🌿

The Via Francigena ( or GR 145), an ancient pilgrimage route, stretches 245 km across Pas-de-Calais from west to east.

Between Calais and Arras, the stages are around 20km long and follow existing footpaths that are renowned for their quality and encourage visitors to explore the countryside and heritage.

4 things to know about the Canadian National Vimy Memorial :

➡ The Vimy Memorial marks the site where Canada's largest engagement in the First World War took place.

➡ In 1922, the French Government ceded to the Canadian people, "free of charge and in perpetuity", the use of the battlefield land, now a peaceful place of remembrance.

➡ The names of the 11,285 Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in France, with no known grave, are engraved at the base of the monument.

➡ The monument includes 20 symbolic sculptures evoking major themes such as the sadness of a young nation, the strength of shared ideals or the prayer for peace.

The Vélomaritime, 120km on the Opal Coast 🚴

Between Berck and Oye-Plage, you can pedal along cycle paths and minor roads, taking in the sumptuous scenery of the Baie de Canche, the Pointe aux Oies, the Dunes de la Slack, the Baie de Wissant and the Platier d'Oye.

Just a few metres from the beach at Berck-Sur-Mer, the dunes reveal the Baie d'Authie, the Baie de Somme's little sister.

What makes its reputation is the colony of grey seals and sea calves that have settled there for decades, which can be observed from a respectful distance.

💡 Meeting point at the Base Nautique (Chemin aux raisins) from 2h30 before low tide until 1h30 after low tide.
