THE PARIS FLEA MARKET

As the largest concentration of antique and second-hand dealers in the world, the Puces de Paris Saint- Ouen, has been a destination for designers and collectors for over a century. A village within a village, its bustling alleyways and hidden corners are home to over one thousand stalls that collectively offer a masterclass in the history of art, craft and design.

In The Paris Flea Market, Kate van den Boogert offers a window into this eclectic and somewhat elusive world by profiling eighteen of the market’s key dealers. Vibrant imagery and revealing texts provide insights into the hidden workings of their trade, the fascinating range of objects on offer and the community of highly skilled artisans which the market nurtures. With expertise ranging from mid- century modern and Art Deco, to Memphis Milano and Louis XVI, these antique and second-hand dealers drive the market’s rich and diverse profusion, not only preserving the history of the decorative arts, but also shaping future design trends.

Don't go to market without it!

If Woody Allen were writing this review he would probably suggest creating a N**i Personnel deck of trading cards like baseball cards-a portrait on the front and statistics on the back: # murdered, mistresses, etc. and a card of the Fuhrer, limited run, would rival a Mickey Mantle rookie card in value.

This is not an original idea to use nefarious people on trading cards as you can see below and if memory serves they appeared in Kinky Friedman's gritty New York novel. GREENWICH KILLING TIME https://preview.mailerlite.com/l5i4p1a4g2

Chalet des Iles
In 1852 Napoléon III ceded the Bois du Boulogne to the City of Paris and Baron Haussmann began its redevelopment.

The Chalet was the realization of Empress Eugenie's dream to erect a chalet on one of the islands created when the lower lake was dug-150 years later M and I enjoyed a relaxed lunch on the chalet's terrace just minutes away from the noise of the city.

You reach the island by a 3 minute boat ride on a vessel reminiscent of the African Queen.

it was originally Fort Duquesne, a French fort, strategically located at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers where they formed the Ohio River. It played a key role in the battles of what Americans know as the French and Indian War.

As Pittsburgh it become the industrial colossus of the Gilded Age producing the coal, iron and steel that powered the industrial age. It was first in steel, food processing, and electricity, and the leaders of those industries--Carnegie, Frick, Heinz, and Westinghouse--are names we still know today.

In this page turning historical novel journalist William Miller, Jr. opens with an account of the great Johnstown flood of 1889 to reveal the indifference to human life exhibited by the robber barons and draws on the life of his great grandfather, Willis McCook, attorney to Henry Frick in his epic battle with Andrew Carnegie.

A must if you are a Pittsburgher and a rich experience if you are not. Terrance, né à Monongahela, PA 1947 https://preview.mailerlite.com/u9g2r0e0e3

Paris Jazz
Jazz had moved up the Missisippi from New Orleans with trumpet players Buddy Bolden, King Oliver and Louis Armstrong and then led by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie swung east to 52nd St and the Village in New York where it slowed down due the constraints of the SLA, the State Liquor Authority, which issued cabaret cards to musicians who played in bars and restaurants where alcohol was being served. A misdemeanour such as smoking or holding a joint was grounds for denial.

So, great players like Miles Davis, Lester Young, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke and Chet Baker crossed the ocean and found fans and work in the caveau that sprung up after World War II. https://preview.mailerlite.com/d2e0y9t1h6

Lulu and Domaine Tempier
Over the past nearly fifty years, many glorious tales have been written across these pages about Domaine Tempier. On my first visit last spring, as we walked up the shady driveway lined with plane trees, I felt a sudden trepidation—like I was stepping foot on holy ground, here at the mecca of my KLWM fine-wine pilgrimage. But my nerves calmed in a moment, as our gracious, easygoing host Daniel Ravier (who’s been running the show since 2000) welcomed us warmly in the little courtyard, handing out glasses filled with cold rosé. Down in the cellar, we tasted old vintages of lore, wines as vivid, complex, and alive as I’ve ever experienced. For lunch, we picnicked on a terrace overlooking the vineyards, bottles sweating in the cooler under a blazing Mediterranean sun. Madison H. Brown, Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant Lulu and Domaine Tempier

The Ki****er is dead, long live the Ki****er!

Say Kaddish for Richard Samet Friedman, singer/songwriter, author, humorist and mensch. Founder of Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys he composed and sang THEY AIN'T MAKING JEWS LIKE JESUS ANYMORE and RIDE EM JEWBOY, a parable of the Holocaust sung here by his fellow chess player, Willie Nelson. It is alleged that Janet Suzman smuggled into his Robben Island cell where it became his favorite song.

And when he couldn't take it anymore he ran for Governor of Texas and lost to Rick Perry. We could use him now!

And just in case you misunderstand or under appreciate him watch the interview below originally recorded in 2012 for the BBC. It could have been recorded just after the Presidential debate last Thursday. https://preview.mailerlite.com/l2s5u9v4m8

American Women Artists in France
For the American women who made Paris their home during the early decades of the twentieth century, the city offered unique opportunities for personal emancipation and professional innovation. While living as expatriates in the international center of all things avant-garde, these women escaped the constraints that limited them at home and enjoyed unprecedented freedom and autonomy. https://mail.terrance-paris.com/h9w6c9k6d8

Judith Jones
In the history of American publishing there are three legends: Max Perkins, Robert Gottlieb and Judith Jones.Rising at time when women were relegated to secretarial roles she never let misogyny interfere with her work.
You might say that she launched the cookbook industry when she bought the manuscript of what became Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child and established the template for PBS cooking shows tied to books.

Like Paris itself, this compact book is filled with secret streets and splendid boulevards, legend and lore, the present and the past, along with passionate talk at cafe tables, the breeze off a great river, the charm of bookstores, the majesty of galleries and museums, and, of course, the most important of all human emotions: delight. It’s like an evening with M. Gelenter himself, walking, dining, laughing, learning.–Pete Hamill https://preview.mailerlite.com/e2h7b9f3l8

Les Grands Magazins

From April 10 to October 13, 2024, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is devoting an exhibition to the birth of department stores, which in the mid-19th century became the new temples of modernity and consumerism. Au Bon Marché, Les Grands Magasins du Louvre, Au Printemps, La Samaritaine and Les Galeries Lafayette reveal their facets through history, politics and society, from the Second Empire to their consecration at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts.

Movie star handsome De Sica gave up acting for directing and we are the beneficiaries. His films are made with compassion and a sharp eye for humanity even when his characters are suffering great emotional pain.

Among my favourites are THE BICYCLE THIEF, SHOESHINE scripted by Cesare Zavattini and THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS.

The twentieth century American department store: a palace of consumption where every wish could be met under one roof - afternoon tea, a stroll through the latest fashions, a wedding (or funeral) planned. It was a place where women, shopper and shopgirl alike, could stake out a newfound independence. Whether in New York or Chicago or on Main Street, USA, men owned the buildings, but inside, women ruled.

In this hothouse atmosphere, three women rose to the top. In the 1930s, Hortense Odlum of Bonwit Teller came to her husband's department store as a housewife tasked with attracting more shoppers like herself, and wound up running the company. Dorothy Shaver of Lord & Taylor championed American designers during World War II--before which US fashions were almost exclusively Parisian copies--becoming the first businesswoman to earn a $1 million salary. And in the 1960s Geraldine Stutz of Henri Bendel re-invented the look of the modern department store.

As a former garmento, I loved this book.Terrance
