I’ve just seen an incredible murmuration of starlings, I’m guessing somewhere near Dunstanburgh/ Craster. Wow. It’s about 10 or 11 miles from here hence the dodgy video! But if I was going to be here this time tomorrow, I would definitely be out chasing murmurations!
Loved our trip to the light trail at The Alnwick Garden last night. Made even more magical by the dusting of snow that covered everything. I loved the cherry orchard, especially, but there’s something to dazzle around every corner. It was, by no means, crowded (we had an 8.15 booking - last booking time 9pm). The Mulled wine was nice too! 🍷

Lovely walk to Hethpool Linn near College valley in the Cheviots. Park at Hethpool car park (35 minutes from the Nook). c5km circular walk, some small inclines and declines and a bit of scrambling up and down rocks to get close to the water. Hoped to get a glimpse of the wild Cheviot Goats around Easter Tor and Wester Tor but they were elusive or good at camouflage . Hey ho!

We used to visit The Alnwick Garden frequently, at least once or twice a year, and then we got a dog and that was that!
Today was the first visit in at least 7 years, so many happy memories of our children running through the rills in their wellies and getting absolutely soaked in the serpentine garden. In fact I think the last time we visited, the cherry orchard was brand new, all saplings and bare earth.
Well, it takes vision to build a great garden and someone has it in spades. All areas are full and green and perfectly maintained . We were so lucky to be able to time our visit to see the cherry orchard in full blossom and it is STUNNING, sooo beautiful, and vast! The swings are charming and the path which snakes through the orchard allows you to experience the orchard from every angle.
We used our BBC Gardeners' World Magazine 2for1 card, so …. Bonus! And we saw antiques chap Paul Martin filming a new antiques programme for the telly box !

Approximately 17 years ago we visited @wallington_nt with our young family.
To chivvy everyone along a bit we suggested a fun game of run along, hide behind a little bush, jump out, say boo, hilarious! It turned out our then 2 year old, Emma was a bit too expert at hiding behind a bush and completely disappeared for a good 5+ minutes. We’ve been scarred by the experience ever since and for years, just the thought of Wallington would send a shudder down the spine.
Well today we revisited for the first time and finally exorcised that particular ghost.
I’m pleased to report it was a delight, the weather was perfect.
We walked a circular route taking in: the dragon heads; the dreaded walled garden (where we lost Emma); a woodland walk; stepping stones across the river; a quick dip in the river for Paddy who then got the zoomies; and a cuppa at the cafe in the courtyard.
Passing through #alnwick on the way up to the Nook, we were just at the right time for a bite to eat and a beer and some tow-tapping tunes @alnwick_brewery with very delicious tacos from @goodtimes.tacos . A successful day out! #northumberland #northumberlandcoast #wallington
There is an air of anticipation as the season proper is about to start.
The highly anticipated visitor attraction @adgefrin, a whisky distillery in nearby Wooler which will also celebrate the area as an important centre of Anglo-Saxon history, will opens its door to the public for the first time this Saturday.
Attractions at @fordandetal I’m sure are frantically prepping for their reopening as @ladywaterfordhall, @heatherslawcorn and @hayfarmheavyhorses are all due to reopen on Monday.
@chillinghamcastle and @chillinghamwildcattle open up again on April 1 as does @heatherslawlightrailway.
@alnwickcastle will reopen on 31st March.
The boats at Berwick, Seahouses and Amble have had all their winter maintenance done ready for all those tourist trips.
And the puffins are back!
At the Nook, we’re ready, with a few little Easter decorations and goodies. Easter holidays, for many, will begin, next Friday when schools break for Easter, but for us it’s today! Hooray! our beautiful, brilliant middle daughter comes home from uni, if only for a short spell.

A very enjoyable trip up to St Cuthberts Cave this morning, where Paddy remembered he likes snow.
The views up there are AMAZING. Last time we were here was early summer and the surrounding fields were a sea of purple opium poppies.
If you’re planning a trip, park at the National Trust car park for St Cuthbert’s Cave, about 1 mile walking. The first bit is uphill and can be a bit muddy depending on the season, but once you’re at the top of the hill it’s clean and easy flat walking. If you have a dog, bear in mind there are sheep grazing at the top.

There followed a very nice lunch with a view @barnatbeal where the folks were extremely friendly (cauli pakora flatbread if you’re interested) and a quick whizz over the causeway to Holy Island before the tide.
Spotted today: partridge, tawny owls, redshank, oystercatchers, curlew. Planning to place a nature spotters diary in the Nook so guests and I can log all the fauna and flora that we spot. What do you think?

Well, what can I say? Our ‘lads’ came up trumps with their Christmas present this year, a personalised blanket woven with the ‘Nook in the North’ artwork . (Also known as the Nooky in the North in certain quarters - Cath! 😉 ). Couldn’t be more thrilled, and we’ve been excited to share it. The only question now, does it live on the double bed or the single? I’m thinking double, but I’ll probably change my mind 6 times! Any opinions?
