Edlingham Castle 🏰 the ruins nestled in the Northumberland countryside, the riverside ruins of a manor house progressively fortified against the Scots during the 14th century.

The castles solar tower still stands although sporting an impressive floor to ceiling crack and held together by steel pins who knows how much longer this will stay. The foundations and part of the walls of the hall house, gatehouse, barbican and other courtyard buildings are still visible, most dating from the 16th century.

Always one of the more interesting castles to me, every time I visit I feel slightly uneasy… maybe it’s the remote location and a real sense of being ‘alone’, or maybe it’s the tales of ghostly goings on reported here.

The castle took part in the Witch trial of Margaret Stothard, who may have something to do with the ghostly activities sometimes encountered among the ruins today!
