As more and more lambs begin to appear around the Lakes, it's especially important to protect pregnant ewes and young lambs from stress and potential harm.

Please help to look after the places you love by keeping your dog on a lead and keeping an eye out for important signs on farmers' gates and fences. If you're out walking this Bank Holiday weekend, you can help by:

🐑 Keeping your dog on a lead to protect livestock and farmers' livelihoods.
🥾 Planning ahead and wearing the right kit, sticking to waymarked paths and checking weather conditions before setting off.
🗑 Always taking your litter home with you.
🚜 Parking in designated car parks and not blocking gateways or driveways, leaving room for farm tractors to pass.
🚪 Closing gates behind you.

Thank you.

The Black Bull is on the prettiest and most historic street in Appleby, a stunning 17th century grade II listed building in the historic market town. Once being the hotel to the neighbouring public house, it has served the local town and guests for centuries. You are instantly transported back in time once you are surrounded by many original features such as the exposed beams, flagged floors and doorways.

High Cup Nick and Peeping Hill

High Cup is a valley carved out by glaciers and the trail will give you spectacular views of the valley when you reach the summit. Starting in Dufton, the trail heads out into the valley before taking the very steep and rocky ascent path which will require some scrambling so please take care at this section. Appropriate sturdy and grippy footwear is required. Warm layers are also recommended as these summits are exposed and can be very windy and cold. This trail is best attempted in calm, clear, and dry conditions as the climb will be very slippery in wetter weather. Enjoy this challenging but rewarding trail.

Beatrix Potter, Hill Top - Windermere

National Trust Hill Top is a time capsule of Beatrix Potter’s life. Full of her favourite things, the house appears as if Beatrix had just stepped out for a walk. Every room contains a reference to a picture in a 'Tale'. Bought with the proceeds of Peter Rabbit in 1905, Beatrix used Hill Top and its surroundings as inspiration for many of her 'little books' - you'll recognise the rhubarb patch where Jemima Puddle-Duck laid her egg and the garden where Tom Kitten and his sisters played!

Askham Fell Circular - Lowther

The Askham Fell Loop starts and ends at Lowther Castle. It takes you through the Lower Grounds of the Castle, and up on to Askham Fell via Askham Village. Venture across the fell top with fantastic views of Lake Ullswater and drop back down via Whale returning to the Castle. Moderate to Challenging mainly due to the climbing involved. The top of the Askham Fell Loop is relatively easy going with some slightly rockier areas to be aware of.

n a picturesque setting beside the crossing of the River Eamont in Cumbria, Brougham Castle was founded in the early 13th century. This great keep largely survives, amid many later buildings - including the unusual double gatehouse and impressive 'Tower of League'.

Both a formidable barrier against Scots invaders and a prestigious residence, the castle welcomed Edward I in 1300. A complex of passages and spiral stairways makes Brougham a fascinating castle to explore, as well as an ideal picnic setting for a family day out.

The top of the keep provides panoramic views over the Eden Valley.

Rheged - Penrith

Rheged is a gallery, café, cinema, shopping venue, workplace and creative space on the edge of the Northern Lakes. A place where friends, family and colleagues can share a meal, watch a film, hold a meeting, see an exhibition, buy a gift or catch up over coffee. A flexible space for getting together or enjoying time alone with a book or notepad; a place where stories are told, ideas are sparked and the Cumbrian landscape is a constant source of inspiration.

Derwent Water Circular - Keswick

There can surely be no other more satisfying walk in the Lake District, that offers so much, with no height gained, is a decent length and occupies a whole day than a circuit of Derwent Water. This circuit is in an anticlockwise direction starting by the suspension bridge over the River Derwent near Portinscale. The option to include Nichol End marina is well worth the slight detour. The estate of Lingholm is traversed mainly in woodland. The views open-up again after the Hawes End Outdoor Centre. At Brandelhow Park are the carved wooden hands celebrating the centenary of the National Trust's first purchase in 2002 of these woods.

It's very icy and cold out there this week…

🚗 Please take extra care while traveling and be sure that you clear all your windows of ice and snow before setting off. If you do need to go out, allow extra time for your journey and where possible stick to treated main roads.

🐶 If your pet gets stuck in ice cold water, please stay out of the water yourself and call the emergency services on 999 right away. Use What3Words to share your exact location if you can.

❄️ Frozen ponds and lakes may look tempting, but they can be very dangerous. It's impossible to know how thick the ice is and it can easily break. The water is cold enough to take your breath away, which can lead to cold water shock and drowning.

Please stay safe and well this winter. ❤🚒
