“There is a delight in the hardy life of the open. There are no words that can tell the hidden spirit of the wilderness that can reveal its mystery, its melancholy and its charm. The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased and not impaired in value. Conservation means development as much as it does protection.”

With new technology moving at an incredible pace, our reach into the natural world grows day by day with nature having less secrets it can hide. I’m often reminded of Winston Churchills words “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.

A total of 73 deer forests existed in the Highlands in the early 1870s according to Napier. The Parliamentary return for 1891 shows that there were 130 deer forests covering 2,472,133 acres.

By the 20th century 34% of the land of the crofting counties were under deer forests and that trend continued by1957 there were 2.8 million acres of land devoted to deer forests.

It’s appears after a little over a 130 years, the era of deer forests is declining as a dominant land use and for those who have spent their whole career working with deer, it’s an immense time of change
