🌊 Fairbourne, Gwynedd, Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Part of the historic county of Meirionnydd, this area was originally salt marshes and farmland, named Morfa Henddol. In around 1865, Solomon Andrews, a Welsh entrepreneur, purchased the promontory, building a sea wall and several houses.

A narrow gauge horse drawn railway was built to help with construction in the area, which later became a steam railway.

In 1895, the wealthy flour-maker Sir Arthur McDougall purchased a substantial acreage, and began development of a ‘model seaside resort’. However, this didn’t fully materialise, as originally envisaged.

The concrete blocks along Fairbourne's seafront are a well-preserved example of Second World War anti-tank defences, named dragons teeth, in case of potential attacks by German forces. Constructed with local beach pebbles and concrete, the 691 blocks, along with pillboxes, were strategically placed to impede enemy advancement inland.
