A key ambition of Scotland's national agritourism strategy is that there will be 1000 farms or crofts actively in agritourism (including farm retail) by 2030 and 50% of these will supply their own food or drink as part of their agritourism experience. At present progress is looking good to achieve this target.

Both visitors and locals in Scotland are increasingly prioritising local options when it comes to food and drink. Trends show a growing preference for food that is sourced or produced within a smaller, more defined local area, as well as for businesses that employ people from the immediate community.

Amanda Brown, Programme Director at Scotland Food & Drink, discussed additional food and drink trends at the 2024 Scottish Agritourism Conference. Click the link below to discover more about what's shaping the industry. 👇

Getting 2025 off to a very positive start, it was a pleasure to attend a meeting with Perth and Kinross Council Senior Management team yesterday at Scottish Agritourism member business, the stunning Guardswell Farm. Anna Lamotte & Digby Legge were our fantastic hosts at the round table discussion which brought together PKC and innovators and entrepreneurs in the local farming and related businesses community. Perth & Kinross Council has been a great supporter of our annual sector conference which is held in the city of Perth.

Scottish Agritourism Manager Laura Paterson and Perthshire Destination Leader Jan Dixon, Solsgirth Home Farm Ltd represented the organisation sharing a little about our work with the sector in Perthshire and beyond, participating in the discussion which focused on areas where the local council could perhaps support challenges and opportunities for farmers and rural communities.

Scottish Agritourism was delighted to be invited (great to also see another member Andrew Donaldson of Comrie Croft there too) and welcomes the prospect of more similar conversations in the future.

As Scottish Agritourism approaches its fifth birthday, Sector Lead Caroline Millar updated delegates at the Scottish Agritourism Conference on progress with Scotland’s National Agritourism Strategy, the growth of the sector and the exciting announcement that Scotland will host the inaugural Global Agritourism Conference in 2026.

Caroline also acknowledged that there is still significant work to be done to establish the sector as a mainstream driver of Scotland’s rural economy and to address outdated and negative perceptions of agritourism as only a means of farm diversification.

The focus was on Scotland's Agritourism Monitor Farm Project and capital grants for Scotland’s National Agritourism Strategy Board’s final meeting of the year.

At The Gin Bothy Experience in Angus, Board members heard from participants of Scotland’s first agritourism monitor farm programme ten years on. Claire Fleming, Peel Farm - food, home and gift, and Kim Cameron, founder of The Gin Bothy gave evidence of the positive impact the programme had for their businesses and on the sustainability of Claire’s family farm, and how support they received in the early days of their ventures, through the programme and through grant funding, has enabled them to grow.

One of four meetings of the strategy implementation board this year, this is the second where businesses have given thought provoking accounts of the realities of running an agritourism business as part of a farming enterprise, highlighting a need for policies that support sector development and growth.

Prior to this meeting, agritourism businesses throughout Scotland were also asked to provide evidence on the impact of capital grants they have received in the past and 48 capital grant case studies were submitted to Board members in a report.

Scottish Agritourism Sector Lead, Caroline Millar, said: “The research into grants was very important for Scotland's national agritourism sector as the 2030 National Strategy for agritourism contains a number of references to capital grants to boost agritourism and farm retail, but there currently no programmes available to support growth. Grants can be of significant value for the next generation becoming established in agritourism and therefore all evidence to show the impact of these is really vital.

It was very emotional hearing from previous monitor farm participants who spoke about the people they met, the peer to peer support and mentoring they received through the programme as being vital to their current successes.”

Scottish Agritourism Sector Lead, Caroline Millar and Head of Brand & Stakeholder Engagement, Laura Paterson met with VisitScotlands new Director of Marketing & Digital, Jill Walker and members of her marketing team today.

Scottish Agritourism enjoys a great relationship with Visit Scotland, regularly meeting with industry relationship managers and ensuring that Scottish Agritourism members are showcased in Visit Scotland campaigns. Official agritourism sector numbers are obtained from Visit Scotland listings and Visit Scotland plays a key role in marketing Scotlands agritourism sector and supporting national agritourism strategy.

Today’s meeting focused on how this support and collaboration between our organisations might develop in the coming months, in line with the deliverables of Scotlands national strategy on agritourism.

It was fantastic to hear from participants of the Agritourism Futures Scholarship Programme at the Scottish Agritourism Conference. During the 'Future of Scotland’s Agritourism Sector' session, chaired by Anna Wylie of Longloch Farming, Fife, we heard from three young people under the age of 35, each aiming to further develop their business within the agritourism sector.

Rachel MacDonald has plans to expand Clachan Sands Campsite on her family farm in North Uist. Rachel spoke about the huge cost of connecting their campsite to the national grid and a lack of available grant funding for agritourism businesses.

Daisy Hewitt, manager of Scottish Agritourism member, Black Isle Berries in the Highlands, shared frustrations with planning and red tape.

Megan Colvin, owner of Lowwood Lodges in Renfrewshire, shared her experience with the short-term let license, raising concerns about varying costs between local authorities and the waiting time for approval.

One of the highlights of this year’s Scottish Agritourism Conference was the International Agritourism session. Chaired by Graeme McColl of Charleton Fruit Farm, the session featured prominent agritourism leaders Pandurang Taware from AGRI Tourism Development Corporation and Marijke Dunselman from Agritourism NZ.

Ahead of the Global Agritourism Conference, to be held in Scotland in 2026, both keynote speakers gave an excellent account of the agritourism sector in their own countries and shared their observations on agritourism in Scotland following a packed weekend visiting agritourism in Angus, Perthshire and Fife. The international duo spoke passionately about their own journeys to achieving recognition for agritourism from national government and agricultural communities and both provided relatable evidence of the importance of specific government agritourism policies to scale up agritourism.

We were delighted to be joined by Jim Fairlie MSP, Minister for Agriculture and Connectivity, at last weeks' Scottish Agritourism Conference.

Mr Fairlie addressed 300 delegates at Perth Concert Hall on Tuesday morning before participating in a panel discussion focused on the benefits of peer-to-peer learning for agritourism, considering both Scottish and global levels.

Speaking to delegates Mr Fairlie committed to look at learnings from other countries where agritourism has become a main driver of the rural economy by considering if Scotland could benefit from a dedicated agritourism policy. He also recognised the benefits of Scotland’s Agritourism Monitor Farms Programme in facilitating knowledge exchange in Scotland.
