My apologies for the lack of posts recently as I have been doing other things.

This shot is one of three lough's that you can find on Fair Head near Ballycastle.

This is 'Lough Dhu' (Doo) which is adjacent to part of an exceptional walk that skirts the top of this majestic headland. Just be aware if its a windy day as strong eddies occur along the ridge which are known to cause a sudden reverse in wind direction ie: you could be standing leaning into a wind and within seconds the same wind could be coming from behind you).

'Lough Dhu' has an mythical mystique about it being associated with a creature known as the 'devil horseman'. I was told this story when I was a kid, before our rural home had electricity, and when people socially gathered around a kitchen of an evening and told stories. You can find the gist of this story on my website: www.causewaycoastalroute.com/fair-head-ballycastle

The other two loughs are nearby 'Lough na Cranagh' which as the name implies has the visible remains of a crannog in the middle, these were fortified and are known to have been in use from the late neolithic until the 17th century, I am not sure of the age of this one. The other lough is 'Lough Fadden' which is nearer to Murlough Bay.

This area is exceptional in its wildness and vistas, well worth a walk from Fair Head or Murlough Bay.

The beautiful wee church of St Thomas was constructed in the early 1800s and built on the site of an earlier church (1722) dedicated to the Primate โ€˜Thomasโ€™ Lindsay of Armagh from where the name Thomas derives.

The site traces its ecclesiastical history to an ancient church building founded here by St Comgall of Bangor circa 580 AD. Comgall was born circa 510 AD on the shore of Larne Lough, he served as a soldier in the army of the Kingdom of Dalriada before becoming a Christian.

He studied at Clonard monastery and later Clonmacnoise. In around 550AD he founded Bangor Abbey where he became Abbot. It was under his auspices there that the monastic settlement was established and developed on Raghery.

A view of a wee island I am always referring to in my posts as it is frequently somewhere in the background. I grew up knowing it as Raghery /Rachri but its common name is Rathlin (English) and Reachlainn (Irish).

A truly beautiful location with its own unique character and ambience. An exceptional location for walkers with very little to no traffic and with an heritage, history and culture that goes back to the Neolithic period.

The main landing place in Church Bay is reached by boat from Ballycastle, from the harbour small roads fan out to Rue Point (nearest in the photo), Altacarry Head (to the right) and the Bull Point (distant left), each one having a lighthouse.

We will take a close look over the next few posts.

Thank you for your vist

The causeway coast is the place to be next weekend as the NI International Airshow returns to the skies. On Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September spectators along the coast will be able to see amazing aerial acrobatics from some of the first time visitors, like the Jet Pitts, while old favourites, like the RAF Typhoon , Irish Air Corps and the Aerosuperbatics Wing Walkers return.
There will also be a full range of family friendly activities on the ground, including a live music stage, vintage aircraft, artisan food market and amusements.
While Portrush is the main centre for the Airshow, Ballycastle is a great base from which to enjoy the event and the whole area, so why not check out our apartments for availability and best rates.

What a beautiful photograph of an amazing part of our little island.

This is the iconic view of Benadanir from the Ulster Way, looking towards Dunseverick Castle and distant Knocklayd mountain. The headland between Benadanir and Stac-na-cuil-dubh is not marked with a name on any maps I have researched, so I tend to personally refer to it is Benadanir Head as it is an integral part of the name for that locale including the port and cave.

Dunseverick was a strategic and important site in ancient times, the castle and landing areas were a natural attraction for commerce and trade, and brought people to settle in the area, it also during a part of its history attracted raiders from the sea.

There are two recorded raids on Dunseverick by Norsemen (Vikings), one in circa 870 AD and another circa 925 AD, during the 870 AD raid all those who could be found were rounded up and held in the natural triangle of this headland, they were them herded off the cliff to their death.

I would love to know the origin of the name and what it means, it does have different ring about it and for all I know may be connected to this event.

Thank you for your visit.

Remember that your shares, likes and follows, help my site reach people despite the dreadful algorithm which suppress the reach because I do not pay for sponsored adverts as the site does not sell anything, it only gives free information.

So a big thank you to everyone who does that, it is very much appreciated.

When FB was launched it promised to be 'free forever 'which it has been but they forgot about 'equality of access' which the algorithm control based on money.
